According to PlugShare.com, there are currently just 318 public charging stations for electric cars in the state of North Dakota. You can use an online map to see if there is one closeby.
Electric cars are sweeping the nation, and the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is preparing for an EV takeover with their Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Plan. The first phase of the program will build chargers no more than 50 miles apart and within one mile away of exits along I-94 and I-29.
But before that plan is realized, you’ll need to work a little bit harder to find a charger for your electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid. Fortunately,

Where to find electric vehicle charging stations in North Dakota

The first step to finding a charging station is to understand exactly which type of charging station you actually need. That’s right—not all charging stations are created equal! There are actually four different types out there:
  • Level 1: 120 volts (like a home outlet); expect over 24 hours for a full charge; best for PHEV
  • Level 2:  220 volts; expect 4 to 8 hours for a full charge; best for EV-charging at home
  • Level 3: Direct current (DC) fast chargers; expect 20 miles of range recharged per minute; best for charging on the go
  • Tesla Supercharger: Network of Tesla-compatible DC fast-chargers; typically more charging ports per site
You’ll find that all of the public charging stations in North Dakota are either Level 2 or DC fast chargers (Tesla brand or Level 3). You won’t find a public Level 1 charger since they take such a long time to bring your vehicle to a full charge.
There a few websites which map out all of ND’s public charging stations:

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in North Dakota?

People typically buy EVs and PHEVs because they want to save on gas—but it’s important to note that charging stations aren’t always free to use.
Level 1 chargers are generally your cheapest option—with an average cost of about $1.50 to $14 depending on your battery size and location—but, as we mentioned, you won’t find any public Level 1s in ND.
Level 2 chargers are occasionally free, but you’ll typically pay about $0.20 to $0.30 per kWh to use one, adding up to an average cost of  $8 to $40per charge depending on your vehicle and how long you leave it plugged in. For example, a quick top-up will cost you just a few bucks, but an overnight plug-in at your hotel’s parking lot could cost four times as much.
Level 3 DC fast chargers, as well as Tesla Superchargers, are by far the most efficient charging stations. So, even though the national average cost is about $0.35/kWh, the average cost per charge still works out to be around  $10 to $30
Bear in mind that the charging station may not be the only cost associated with charging your EV—you may also have to pay for parking. However, many people save on costs with charging memberships for a monthly fee rather than a pay-as-you-go rate. This is a great option if there’s a particular charging station you use regularly!
