Electric Car Charging Stations in Nebraska

Omaha and Lincoln have the most EV charging stations out of any Nebraska cities, but a whole lot more will be coming to the state over the next several years.
Written by Melanie Mergen
According to the Alternative Data Fuel Center’s official count, there are 425 public EV charging ports in Nebraska—and that number’s only going to grow over the next several years. You can find the one closest to you by using maps from websites like PlugShare, ChargeHub, or the AFDC.
As of June 2022, 3,091 of Nebraska’s registered vehicles are EVs, according to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. That’s some pretty significant growth, considering that in August 2020, that number was 1,373, and in December 2021, it was 2,527.
Thanks to federal funding being made available to expand the number of Nebraska charging stations, plus various incentives available to Nebraska residents who decide to purchase an EV for themselves, this growth is very likely to speed up even more.
So, if you’re one of Nebraska’s drivers who owns an EV right now, or if you’re thinking about buying one soon, do you know where you can charge your battery when you’re away from home? If you’re still trying to pin down locations,

Where to find electric vehicle charging stations in Nebraska

Where and how you charge your electric vehicle (EV) matters. and there are a few different ways you can do so.
How far you need to travel and how much time you have to charge up in advance will determine the most ideal option for you. Here’s how your options compare:
  • Level 1: Uses a conventional 120V household outlet; can generally add 5 miles of range per hour; ideal for plug-in hybrids or short local trips
  • Level 2:  Uses 240V or 208V outlets; can generally add 25 miles of range per hour; may require additional upgrades for an at-home setup; common option at workplace or public charging stations
  • Level 3: Also referred to as DC fast charging, or DCFC; can add a range of 100-200 miles per 30 minutes; may require a different adapter than Level 1 or 2 charging; ideal for longer road trips, but may reduce your battery’s lifespan with extensive use
  • Tesla Supercharger: Tesla’s proprietary DC fast chargers; can recharge up to 200 miles in about 15 minutes, according to Tesla
Of course, how fast your vehicle can actually recharge based on your own vehicle’s capabilities, but this gives you a general idea of each charging level’s capabilities.
At present, Nebraska has an official tally of 425 public EV charging ports, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC). The large majority are found in the
Omaha-Council Bluffs
and
Lincoln
areas. Most are Level 2 charging stations, but a number of DCFC locations are littered throughout the state, particularly around these two areas and along Interstate 80.
But the number of electric charging stations in Nebraska is only going to grow in the near future.
Thanks to help from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Nebraska will receive about $30 million in funding to expand the number of EV charging stations across the state over the next five years, particularly within proximity to I-80.
In the meantime, when you need to scour nearby locations to find a public charging site, here are a few websites that can help you do just that:
  • Alternative Fuels Data Center
: Shows Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging stations
  • ChargeHub
: Lists Level 1, Level 2, DCFC (Level 3), and Tesla Supercharger station options
  • PlugShare:

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in Nebraska?

Recharging your EV can be free at certain locations—but not always. Still, even when it comes at a price, it tends to be a lot cheaper than filling up a gas tank.
It’s common for EV charging to cost between $0.20 and $0.25 per kWh. Other charging stations may opt to charge per hour or per minute instead, and some might require a minimum payment of several dollars. Oh, and you might have to pay for parking, too.
But you might be able to cut down on your overall charging costs by opting for a membership with certain charging station networks.

Nebraska electric vehicle incentives

For now, EVs only make up a small fraction of registered vehicles in Nebraska, but as EV charging locations expand, that number is likely to grow.
For Nebraskans who decide to buy an EV in the near future, there are a number of incentives to take advantage of.
At the federal level, you could enjoy a tax credit of up to $7,500, depending on the vehicle.
If you’re looking to capitalize on more incentives, both the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) and the Southern Public Power District (SPPD) also offer their residential customers a $4,000 rebate after purchasing a new EV, as well as a $500 rebate for installing a qualifying Level 2 charging station. Additionally, SPPD offers a $400 rebate for any pre-wiring required for a Level 2 charging station installation.
