background
If you squint, these two
electric vehicles
may look identical. Heck, even with perfect vision, it's hard to tell the difference between the 2022 Kia EV6 and the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. While EVs are often associated with luxury, Kia and Hyundai have found a way to deliver economically priced green vehicles.
But which is better? We decided to take a deep dive and pitted the 2022 Kia EV6 vs. the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 to find the better car. While these economy brands will probably have better
insurance rates
than their luxury competitors, let's see how the two compare against each other.

The economics of the EV6 vs. the Ioniq 5

In terms of sticker price, there will be a lot of variance amongst the trims when cost-comparing the 2022 Kia EV6 vs. the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Let's start at the low ends. The lowest trim for the Kia EV6 is the aptly named Light RWD which starts at $42,155. At the other end of the spectrum is the GT-Line AWD which goes for $57,115.
As for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the cheapest trim is the SE Standard Range, which comes with a price tag of $41,195. For the high rollers, there is the Limited Long Range AWD, but it’s still modestly priced at $55,745.
No matter which trim level you choose, the EV6 and Ioniq 5 will be very similar in terms of dollar amount.

Key differences with the 2022 Kia EV6 vs. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

These two cars could be called twins. Trying to find true key differences when comparing the 2022 Kia EV6 vs. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 requires a discerning eye. After all, you'll find that they have very similar weights and speed performance, and share the same fully-independent suspension.
Fortunately,
The Car Connection
did some deep digging to find easy-to-miss differences. One notable difference is that the Ioniq 5 is a bit taller, offering an extra two inches of headspace for the driver and passengers. While this is certainly a pro for taller drivers, it does cause the car to have just slightly weaker handling when compared to the EV6.
The taller design of the Ioniq 5 also offers more cargo space. Behind the rear seats, the Ioniq 5 offers 27.2 cubic feet of storage rather than the 24.4 cubic feet found in the EV6.

Other electric wagons on the market

These two cars may be the only EV wagon options at the moment, but that may be changing in the next few years. Wagons seem to be making a comeback in Europe (although they've always been popular in Germany), but it is unclear if this trend will cross the pond.
BMW has been working hard in making their first electric wagon in the i5 Touring. If everything goes to plan, BMW will be able to release this wagon by 2024. Volkswagen is very close to releasing the VW Aero B Estate in the European market. If successful, it could find its way stateside in due time. Meanwhile, the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo was just released.
Should the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq become successful in the U.S., it is highly likely that other carmakers will try to bring their own EV wagons to the market.
