F-150 Lightningstretched into the tens of thousands, but the Lightning’s runaway success left many fans wondering if the brand had plans to electrify the F-150’s heavy-duty siblings.
Sadly, Ford’s CEO stated that an electrified Super Duty truck won’t be coming any time soon. The car ownership experts at Jerry took a closer look at why Ford is holding off on making an electric version of its most powerful trucks.
The important role of Ford’s Super Duty trucks
Bloomberg, the importance of the Super Duty series for Ford is twofold. Trucks like the F-250, F-350, and F450 occupy an important niche and are often purchased for commercial use in industries like construction, utilities, emergency response, and mining.
The Super Duty also serves as an important product for Ford, as the range generates a massive amount of annual revenue for the brand.
A representative from Ford stated that Super Duty sales alone exceed an entire year’s worth of revenue from Southwest Airlines, which sold $15.8 billion in flights last year.
Ford’s newest Super Duty even got a full overhaul that will make it more powerful than ever. Three engine options are available including a 6.8-liter V8 gasoline engine, a new 6.7-liter diesel engine, and an even bigger 7.3-liter gas engine.
It stretches 22 feet in length and towers over other cars at 6 and ½ tall. The redesigned Super Duty will be able to tow and haul more cargo than ever.
Why Ford isn’t making an electric Super Duty truck
Because of their highly specialized field of use, the Super Duty trucks are beholden to certain performance requirements.
While many automakers are moving away from releasing gas-guzzling trucks like the Super Duty, representatives from Ford argue that the vehicle “a critical product.”
According to Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley, an electrified version of the Super Duty would require a battery so large that it would compromise the truck’s performance too much.
“You wind up sacrificing range a lot -- like cut your range in half with towing,” said Farley to Bloomberg. “We don’t think this segment is going electric any time soon.”
Farley has a point—the type of battery that could deliver what customers expect from a Super Duty truck would likely be so large that it would significantly reduce cargo capacity.
Heavy towing and hauling would also diminish the range of an EV much faster than a combustion-engine car would burn up fuel.
The Super Duty can still help Ford go electric
The Super Duty may not be Ford’s most eco-friendly option, but revenue from sales will actually go towards Ford’s $50 billion
“The Super Duty is clearly a big revenue driver which is extremely important to Ford as they move toward this new future,” said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights for automotive researcher Edmunds.com as reported by Bloomberg.
“Having the Super Duty contribute so much to the bottom line certainly makes that challenge much easier.”
