Back to the Future is right. The movie-famous time traveling car is getting a major upgrade. The DeLorean Motor Company
will be introducing its new electric concept in August 2022 at Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach, California. The DeLorean EVolved’s design will be reminiscent of the DMC-12, save all the mechanical components. The company has remained quite tight-lipped about specifics, but a recent teaser photo has the car world buzzing with speculation.
The DeLorean Motor Company
Recently revived and incorporated in Winter 2022 by Stephen Wynne, the DeLorean Motor Company plans on becoming a full-line original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The original company went bankrupt in 1982. Wynne has been operating Classic DeLorean, collecting trademarks and assets, in its honor ever since.
Enter CEO Joost de Vries and his experience with companies such as Tesla and Volvo. He wants to grow the company from one reimagined car to a strong startup brand. According to Motor Authority
, the DeLorean EVolved is not simply a continuation car. The company currently employs about 50 people, but this number will grow to 400 when the car hits production. This will likely happen in 2024.
Carscoops
reports that the DeLorean Motor Company has teamed up with Italdesign to build the new electric coupe. The pairing is fitting considering the latter’s founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, designed the original DMC-12 back in the 1970s.MORE: Tesla Was Surprisingly Missing From Autotrader's 'Best Electric Cars for 2021'
A few details about the DeLorean EVolved
The DeLorean EVolved will be trading in its ancestor’s rear engine for dual electric motors. This signifies an all-wheel drive sports car on the horizon. According to Car and Driver
, the company has already set expectations: This model won’t be joining the ranks of hypercars. But critics can expect the DeLorean to be faster than its predecessor, which was more renowned for its looks than its speed. Range will be more than 300 miles, on par with other cars in this niche segment. Experts suspect this will be a limited-production model.
The price point has yet to be divulged, but officials have hinted it would sit somewhere between a high-end Tesla and the cheapest McLaren. This gives us a ballpark of $150,000 to $200,000.
The battery will be larger than 100 kWh, with a fast-charging rate of around 150 kWh. Battery and motor suppliers remain unknown.
Teaser photos confirm the classic gullwing design is intact, but the stainless steel body of the DMC-12 was ditched due to weight concerns. The two-tone silver and black paint job makes a satisfactory substitution. The DeLorean sports wide rear fenders, an illuminated V emblem on the grille, and a louvered rear roof panel.
