Ford is undoubtedly the most historic car company in America. The company pioneered the assembly line, allowing cars to be built for more affordable prices. Decades later, they would build cutting edge muscle cars like the
Ford would lose its mojo in the ‘90s and ‘00s, but they have since resurrected their innovative legacy in the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Mach-E is not a muscle car built for drag races, but instead a fully-electric crossover SUV.
Despite only being in production since 2021, the Ford Mustang Mach-E was recently placed on the “Best Cars for 2022” list from
Consumer Reports. Here is what makes the Ford Mustang Mach-E so special.
How does Consumer Reports rank the best cars of the year?
Consumer Reports has a peculiar methodology for selecting their best vehicles. To oversimplify, certain safety features must be obtained to even be eligible for the list. For example, all cars must have forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a few other features to be considered.
For vehicles that meet these safety requirements, they are then evaluated on road tests, predicted reliability, and owner satisfaction. After all this information collection, the Ford Mustang Mach-E made the final cut, and was awarded the best vehicle in the $45,000-plus category.
Why the Ford Mustang Mach-E is so widely praised
Longtime Mustang fans may be scratching their heads wondering why a crossover SUV is carrying the Mustang name. The short answer is good marketing. The Mustang Mach-E is available in five trims: Select, Premium, California Route 1, GT, and GT Performance Edition.
The trims and add-on packages offer a lot of variety for prospective drivers. On the lower end is the Select, which starts at $44,995, and on the high end is GT Performance Edition, starting at $66,095. Drivers have the option of adding all-wheel drive and expected mileage ranges from 210-305 miles. The horsepower also has a wide range across the available trims, starting at 266 hp and capping out at 480 hp.
Clearly, the Ford Mustang Mach-E was designed to offer a lot of customization for potential drivers. Car critics took note, and Consumer Reports called this E-SUV the "first purpose-built EV that blends being green with character and driving fun."
Will the Ford Mustang Mach-E make Ford an EV leader?
It's no secret that Tesla is the king of EVs. After that, Chevy and Nissan get a nod for their early entries into the EV market. But Ford will be making another big splash in the EV world in addition to the Mustang Mach-E. So much so that they may become the new leader for EVs. We're talking about the F-150 Lightning.
Whoever makes the first successful fully electric truck will undoubtedly gain a lot of popularity in the EV world. Despite COVID and supply chain bottlenecks, the F-150 Lightning is expected to go on sale this spring.
