The much sought-after
Corvette
is getting a new upgrade unlike any other we’ve seen before and finally going electric. The news broke following an announcement from GM, but it’s unclear as of yet whether it’s going to be an
all-electric car or a hybrid model

Don’t worry the original Corvette isn’t going anywhere

Regardless of the status of the new model, GM confirmed that they will continue producing combustion engine cars, so if you’re a fan of the iconic Corvette’s powerful gas-powered engine, you won’t have to say goodbye to it just yet.
According to a report in
CNBC
, GM President Mark Reuss said the new electrified Corvette is “coming very quick,” and will be released “in addition to all of the great performance that Chevrolet and Corvette have been known for, for many, many years with our internal combustion engines.”
This announcement is just the latest move of many as legacy automakers strive to compete with the likes of industry-disrupting electric vehicle producer
Tesla
. While some have been quicker to adopt electric cars than others, slowly but surely, brand after brand is not only producing electric versions of their cars, but also pledging to fully convert their fleet to electric for the future.

The electric Corvette is part of a larger shift towards EVs

GM, which is the parent company to Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac to name just a few, has pledged to go fully electric by 2035. While this may be surprising to EV skeptics, GM is just the latest of many brands that have made a similar pledge including Bentley, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Volvo, Audi and Jaguar.
Longtime Chevy competitor Ford also recently electrified their most ionic sportscar with the Mustang Mach-E, but had to change much about the model to adapt it to electric.
Will Chevrolet also be able to adapt the Corvette without losing exactly what makes it a Corvette? For sports cars especially, converting models to electric can be complicated, as electric motors face some unique challenges when it comes to living up to the standard set by powerful combustion-engine sports cars.

What can we expect from electric sports cars?

While electric sports cars tend to excel when it comes to powerful torque and seamless acceleration, they have yet to be able to reach or maintain the same powerful top speeds that cars like the Corvette are known for.
Souped-up versions of the Ford Mustang, like the Shelby GT500, can reach top speeds of 180mph, but the electric version—the Mach-E—taps out at just 130 mph. The same is true for other electric versions of luxury SUVs like the Audi e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace.
While the electrified Corvette could very realistically meet these same standards, the real competition unsurprisingly comes from Tesla. Tesla has yet to make good on its claim that the Model S Plaid could accelerate to speeds of 200 mph, but the luxury EV still broke all-electric car records when it reached 173 mph in a test run.
