When Elon Musk sent an email on May 31 to all Tesla employees, announcing the end of
remote workfor the company and forcing everyone to return to the office, he wasn’t acting in a bubble.
The move was part of a wider corporate pushback in all industries against the idea that the work-from-home model established during
COVID-19could be permanent for some. But that didn’t make it any less difficult to execute.
In the two years of the pandemic, Tesla grew exponentially. That meant more desks, chairs, computers, and conference rooms were needed for all its employees to work from the company’s facilities. The trouble is, Tesla didn’t make sure of that before enacting the ban.
Rollout of Tesla’s anti-remote work policy is a fiasco
The results of the poorly planned move to in-office work at Tesla have been a mess. Across the company, morale is down, and one-tenth of the workforce is absent every day.
Employees who worked remotely were first given until the end of September to make arrangements. But
CNBCsays Tesla HR called remote workers who live far from their workspaces what their plans were, and those who didn’t plan to relocate were dismissed.
In the San Fransisco Bay area, CNBC reports that the company attempted a compromise, mandating at least three days in the office. But current employees said the office couldn’t even handle that amount of workers, and the office was forced to lower it to two days.
The move has also motivated some of Tesla’s talent to look elsewhere for work. CNBC reported at least two resignations from Tesla staff who wanted a more flexible schedule than the company was willing to give them.
How will Tesla’s shift to in-office work affect Tesla ownership?
The effects caused by Tesla’s decision to cut remote work out of its employment strategy won’t change how they manufacture EVs or serve their customers yet. But the internal chaos could ripple into their production and maintenance times if it’s not handled quickly.
Prices for Teslas already spiked in the U.S. this year, albeit for different reasons, so any effect on service caused by the ban on remote work could be enough for drivers to look elsewhere.
