Tesla was once considered the best entry-level vehicle for the EV market. But with recent price hikes
, the young car company is making it clear that they want to be considered a luxury brand. With legacy carmakers ramping up their EV lineup, Tesla wants to stand out as a premium car brand.
For those who want a more economic Tesla, they are often left comparing the Tesla 3 vs Y. Tom's Guide
recently did a comparison of the two vehicles, and they are quite similar in many metrics. Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y: the specs
If you want to race a Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y, the 3 would win. The Tesla 3 can cruise from 0 to 60 MPH in 3.1 seconds versus the Y's 0 to 60 MPH of 3.5 seconds. Additionally, the Model 3 has a superior top speed of 162 mph compared to the Y's top speed of 155.
If you need more cargo space, Model Y is the better choice. The Model 3 is classified as a sedan, while the Y is a hatchback. The Y also offers more cubic volume, as it is two inches wider and longer than the Model 3 and carries an extra 7 inches of height.
As for range, it depends on which trim you select. The base model of the Model 3 carries a range of 272 miles, but the Long Range and Performance trims can garner 358 and 315 miles respectively.
The Model Y starts at 303 miles and can top out at 330 miles on the Long Range Trim. If range is the most important factor in your buying decision, then the Tesla Model 3 Long Range is the winner at 358 miles.
Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y: Which is the better value?
When comparing warranties between cars, most people have to build complex spreadsheets. That's not the case when analyzing the Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y, although different trims will have different warranties in regards to the battery and drive unit.
If a Model 3 or Y is classified as a "short-range" trim, then it will have a weaker warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles. Trims that are considered "long-range" will have a slightly better warranty of 8 years/120,000 miles.
All other warranties (bumper to pumper, parts, body, etc.) are the same across all Tesla models.
As for dollar amount, the Model 3 is much more economical than the Model Y. A Model 3 will start at $46,990 vs the Y's starting price of $62,990.
How to choose the right EV
In the past, there weren't a lot of options for EV brands, but that will change this year. While the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf have been around for a while, there will be a lot of new EV cars to choose from.
Most of which are cheaper than their Tesla competitors. If you want to drive a green vehicle, there are plenty of other options beyond a ritzy Tesla.
