If You Buy an F-150 Lightning You Get a Bit Of Free Charging

Ford wants F-150 Lightning owners to use the charging station network of its partner, Electrify America. Will $100 of free charging do the trick?

There are a lot of good reasons to choose a Ford F-150 Lightning over other
pickup trucks
, but the Blue Oval is offering an extra incentive for buyers—250 kilo-watt hours (kWh) of free charging at Electrify America charging stations.
250 kWh won’t get you to
the moon
, but the F-150 Lightning can travel up to 575 miles with that amount of energy, or about three fill-ups for the EV (two, if you upgrade to the extended range model).

Ford’s free charge for F-150 Lightnings is not a new idea

F-150 Lightning
buyers might be surprised by Ford’s free-charge perk, but it’s not the first time the company implemented the idea. Back in 2020, when the Mustang Mach-E was launched, the same incentive was offered.
The two to three free charges, which normally cost EV drivers under $100, likely won’t convince people to choose the Lightning over rival electric pickups like the Rivian R1T. But
InsideEVs
says that’s not the point.
The goal of the offer is to get electric F-150 drivers familiar with using the charging stations of its partner,
Electrify America
. Ford and Electrify America have collaborated in a number of ways since the two companies teamed up three years ago.

Ford and Electrify America are in cahoots

Since 2019, Ford and Electrify America have worked together to stake their claims on the U.S shift to EVs. According to
CleanTechnica
, the two companies collaborated to offer a comprehensive charging experience to electric Ford drivers.
Thanks to the partnership, Ford owners can manage their charging plans using data collected by Electrify America that’s integrated into their FordPass and interior touchscreens. The locations and status of the company’s 800 fast charging stations are sent directly to the EVs.
The mutually beneficial program does everything but guarantee customers for Electrify America while creating a premium service for Ford to offer the people buying their electric vehicles.

Other F-150 Lightning ownership costs

The starting price for an F-150 Lightning is still significantly higher than it is for the gas-burning version of the truck. You can get a no-frills F-150 for just under $30,000. The cheapest electric one costs about $47,000. Average coverage rates present a similar price gap.
As you may have surmised from the info above, the Lightning offers one way to save compared to the regular F-150: fuel/energy.
Charging costs about a third of what you’d pay to travel the same distance using gasoline. Depending on how and where you recharge, it can get even cheaper.
