background
ChargePoint and Charge Across Town are joining forces to make Ev charging station more accessible.
Electric vehicles are on the rise, becoming more popular and affordable as more car makers expand their EV and hybrid offerings to consumers. This means, though, that there need to be
more places to charge
, and unlike cars that run on gas, making sure your electric car has enough energy to go can’t be done in a few minutes.
It takes time, more than most people are willing to hang around and wait. However, a few companies are teaming up to prepare for the influx of EV drivers.
Jerry
has the details about the companies and their plans for California.

ChargePoint, an electrical charging app and network

ChargePoint started in 2007, intending to make EVs more accessible. However, not everyone or everywhere has the tools needed to charge an electric vehicle. And as mentioned before, it takes time, time that you could be running errands, working, or sleeping and not waiting with your car for it to finish charging.
So ChargePoint worked to set up charging stations across North America and Europe so that you’re not stuck somewhere without a charge.
According to ChargePoint
, they estimate that someone is plugging in to charge their EV or hybrid vehicle every second. Users of their app can:
  • Find charging stations (theirs and other ones)
  • Know whether that charging station is in use or available
  • How much it’ll cost
  • Set up the charge
  • Know when it’s done or almost done
  • Pay for the charge
  • End the session

The non-profit Charge Across Town

Charge Across Town is a 501c3 non-profit located in California. Their goal is to help move the state towards an electric vehicle future through educational events.
This means hosting events where people can interact with EVs, ask questions, and learn more about them in a non-sales way.
According to Charge Across Town
, this has led to a bump of +25% EV rate of people leasing or buying electric vehicles.

ChargePoint and Charge Across Town’s team up

The more electric vehicles you have, the more places you’ll need to charge them. It’s a simple fact. So these two Californian companies plan to start in their home state with the help of funding from California’s Energy Commission's REACH program. (Specifically $4.25 million).
Through this program, they plan to focus on making charging more accessible.
How? By installing CPF50 and CT4000 electric vehicle charging stations at hundreds of apartment complexes and condos.
The plan is that 75% of these hundreds of new charging stations will belong in low-income neighborhoods. They also plan to work with landlords and tenants of condos and apartment complexes to host educational events and collect feedback on the program.
The project announced in their press release that they believe those who live in the apartment complexes and condos they plan to target will “drive over 2.7 million electric miles during five years” if they switch to electric vehicles. This will be akin to stopping “more than 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide” from being produced.
