Watch out Tesla, Kia and Hyundai are coming after a piece of your pie. The sleek, evolved design of the Hyundai
Ioniq 5 and its sibling, the Kia EV6
, are making a massive splash in the EV market this year. Through May of this year, these two cars have outsold the Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, and even the smoking hot, Mustang Mach - E. Tesla still sells more cars but in terms of production, it’s taken Hyundai and Kia months to do what it took Tesla years.
So what’s behind the success of the South Korean automakers' big push in 2022? A potent combination of foresight and timing.
The origin of Kia and Hyundai’s EVs
According to Bloomberg
, the plan for the Ioniq 5 and EV 6 began about six years ago. At the time, the Chevy Bolt had just rolled out and Kia was considering a similar size car, but they ended up pivoting in the end. The result was a larger, sportier, and generally fancier car with only a slightly higher price point. In short, they weren’t the first to the party, but they stepped up the game considerably.
“The thinking was, with the platform we have and the market understanding we have, let’s put together a really bold, breakthrough proposition,” said Steve Kosowski, manager of long-range strategy at Kia America. “We’re going to make a statement that Kia is here.”
Kia and Hyundai’s timing
Kia and Hyundai have also benefitted from general lucky timing. As gas prices continue to soar, many buyers are dipping their toes in the EV market for the first time.
Rather than commit to a more expensive option, buyers are finding comfort in the recognizable name of Kia as well as the price point. Both models start at around $40,000.

What are the features of their EVs?
The Ioniq and EV 6 are both considered cross-over SUVs so they come loaded with more storage than your typical sedan. With the seats up, they offer almost 30 cubic ft of storage which is doubled to almost 60 with the back seats folded down.
Both models get over 300 miles per charge and charge at some of the industry's fastest speeds, adding about 16 miles for every minute charged at its maximum capability.
They also come with some novel features including adjusting pedals for regenerative braking and bi-directional power that allows you to turn your car into an external power source. Car camping will never be the same again.
The interiors come with eco-friendly plush seats, welcomed technology, and ambient lighting features. It’s a flute of champagne for the price of a beer.
