As the German car company prepares to terminate the production of all ICE-powered cars starting in 2033,
Audi
has started production on its own system of charging ports in order to help keep its
EV
owners supported on the roadways. After a six-month trial run in Germany, Audi owners in the U.S. will hopefully see Audi brand charging ports being installed in cities near them in the future.
And while you wait for Audi to install their U.S.-based charging system, it’s a great idea to start shopping for
affordably-priced
EV insurance.

Details of Audi’s charging port systems emerge

Even though Americans may have to wait for a bit until they see an Audi brand charging port system installed stateside, German Audi owners got the first taste of Audi’s EV charging aspirations.
Electrek
reports that the site in Nuremberg offered Audi drivers the chance to plug in their car and step inside a climate-controlled lounge where they could enjoy coffee while relaxing in a waiting room with other drivers. The charging port location was so popular that even Volkswagen’s CEO (Volkswagen owns Audi) came to try it out for himself and lauded it as a massive success.

What other German cities will see Audi-brand charging ports?

So far, Audi has plans to install systems in Zurich, Berlin, and Salzburg this year, in addition to three other undisclosed locations in major German metropolitan areas in 2023. The carmaker is also looking for on-site business partners to help make their charging port lounges more comfortable and convenient for drivers, so it’s possible that restaurants and coffee companies could start to set up shop inside these charging locations.
The first location in Nuremberg that Audi installed recorded around 3,100 charges at its Nuremberg charging hub site between January and April. This averages out to about 24 charges per day.

When will the U.S. see Audi charging port systems?

It’s not quite certain when Audi will begin setting up charging ports in foreign countries, but hopefully the U.S. is high on their priority list. Considering that they have close to a dozen projects already lined up over the next two years in Germany alone, it’s possible that American Audi owners will have to wait a while.
Thankfully, there are several companies that are embarking on a nationwide campaign to establish a connected system of charging ports, including ChargePoint, BP, and Shell. Though it may seem surprising to see oil companies dipping their toes into the EV market, they realize that the days of fossil fuel use in personal vehicles are numbered.
