2023 Kia Niro EV: How Does It Drive?

The 2023 Kia Niro EV has a confident and comfortable drive, but no frills like other electric vehicles have.

Many car critics describe the latest
Kia
vehicle as “boring” and “regular” – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
The
2023 Kia Niro EV
is a standard, reliable, and efficient electric vehicle, it just doesn’t have all the bells and whistles we see frequently in the automotive world today.
More recently, critics have been test driving the Kia Niro EV and many say the same thing about the drive – it’s a very adequate car. Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 Kia Niro.

2023 Kia Niro EV Engine

The 2023 Kia Niro EV is powered by a 201hp electric motor that gets the job done.
As
Car and Driver
points out, like many electric vehicles, the Kia Niro doesn’t pack a punch when it comes to acceleration, but instead, the electric motor gradually increases its speed and power to get to the maximum 188 lb-ft of torque.
The engine performs in Eco, Normal, and Sport mode, and drivers can switch freely among the three.
The EPA gives the Kia Niro an official range of 253 miles before needing a charge. While the Niro doesn’t include a 120-volt charging cord like many electric vehicles, drivers can rely on Level 2 chargers or standard DC fast chargers to get the battery all juiced up.
According to
Electrek
, with the DC fast chargers, Kia promises the Niro can get from 10 percent battery to 80 percent battery in about 45 minutes with a peak charging rate of 85kW.
Plus, the car comes with 500kWh of free charging on Electrify America’s network, which is good for about 1,900 miles of driving. Charging time is definitely slower than many other EVs on the market, but the range and free charging can make up for the slow charging time.

2023 Kia Niro EV Performance

When it comes to the drive and performance, critics find the 2023 Kia Niro EV good – it’s not great, but it’s not bad either. The Kia Niro EV gives drivers a quick and quiet acceleration, with Car and Driver reviewers hitting 30mph in 2.9 seconds, and making the 0 to 60mph run 6.7 seconds. Reviewers were through the quarter mile in 15.2 seconds at 94mph.
In addition to the totally electric Kia Niro, the brand also unveiled a conventional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid Kia Niro model. A car reviewer at
Jalopnik
who drove all three points out that although these acceleration numbers aren’t anything to write home about, the Kia Niro EV was noticeably quicker than its sibling hybrid Kia Niro models.

2023 Kia Niro EV Insurance

Although the Kia Niro EV has been coined by reviewers as reliable, efficient, and an overall solid vehicle, drivers still need car insurance for it. Unfortunately, a lot of car insurance companies still view electric vehicles as luxury, which means car insurance for EVs is often more expensive than car insurance for gas-powered vehicles.
