Long and cold winters, along with regular road maintenance and construction, are often the causes of road closures in Wyoming. While some Wyoming roads are only closed temporarily, others are scheduled for entire seasons, requiring drivers to seek out alternative routes during winter weather.
As one of the great mountain states, Wyoming is known for its breathtaking natural beauty. A number of tourists arrive in Wyoming every year to visit Yellowstone or one of its many other spectacular national parks. Unfortunately, the Equality State is also known for its brutal winter weather that leads to road closures during the snowy season.
Winter driving can be difficult. That’s why car insurance comparison super app Jerry has created a guide on how to check for the latest road closures in Wyoming. We’ll also go over seasonal closures and how to save money on car insurance in the mountainous state.

How to check for road closures in Wyoming

Road closures happen in every state due to traffic accidents, busy construction sites, and severe weather conditions. They can be difficult to predict, and if you just happen to come upon an unexpected road closure while driving, it could set you back hours.
But don’t let road closures get you down! Prepare ahead by using resources from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), including their WYDOT Travel Information Service site or their Wyoming 511 Travel Information Map. These websites are available 24/7 to give you the latest updates on Wyoming road conditions and traffic information statewide.

Yellowstone National Park road closures

Due to difficult icy and snowy road conditions, Yellowstone National Park road closures usually become a reality after the first week of November all the way to mid-April.
If you’re looking to drive through Yellowstone during the winter, it’s always a good idea to check the National Park Service website first for the latest information on road conditions and possible closures

Four Wyoming roads that close in the winter

Wyoming road closures caused by accidents or construction are usually temporary. But Wyoming’s mountain climate requires WYDOT to close certain roads on a regular schedule each year.

1. Teton Park Road

Closed from: November 1 to April 30
Highest elevation: 13,775 feet
Grand Teton National Park covers about 310,000 acres of sublime mountains, lakes, and other natural wonders. It's also home to the highest peak of all Wyoming national parks. Teton Park Road is closed every year from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain Lodge to be groomed for recreational winter activities.

2.  Moose-Wilson Road

Closed from: November 1 until mid-May
Highest elevation: 6,194 feet
Moose-Wilson Road, as the name suggests, connects the towns of Moose and Wilson. During the winter season, the road is closed from the south at the Granite Trailhead and from the north at the Death Canyon Junction. During this time, the Moose-Wilson Road is open to visitors who want to ski, snowshoe, or go on a snowy hike.

3. Grassy Lake Road

Closes based on conditions
Highest elevation: 7,057 feet (Rockefeller Parkway)
Located in the Rockefeller Parkway, Grassy Lake Road closes based on winter conditions and remains unplowed during the snowy season from Flagg Ranch to the west. Once the park determines there’s adequate snow coverage, this road is open to visitors who want to use a snowmobile or go skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.

4. Granite Hot Springs gravel road

Closed from: December to April
Highest elevation: 6,987 feet

The gravel road leading to Granite Hot Springs in Bridger-Teton National Forest is closed to vehicles during the winter months. If you want to access this particular road, you may do so only by snowmobile, dog sled, ski, or fat tire bike.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍

Yes! But if you’re not used to driving on snowy roads, you should take some precautions. Invest in some snow tires if possible, look into WYDOT’s travel information service website, and always pay attention to the road!
Of course! You can download the Wyoming 511 mobile app for statewide traffic reports and live updates on road closures.
