An official
Wyoming
bill of sale includes the car’s make, model, year, and VIN, along with the buyer and seller’s names, addresses, and signatures. You must also list the purchase price agreed upon by both parties. A notary signature is not required but is highly recommended.
If you are involved in a private vehicle sale, completing a bill of sale is an important step in the transaction. Not all states make it a legal requirement to provide a bill of sale. But it is best practice to fill out a bill of sale even when it isn’t required.
The following article has all the information you need to know about filling out a Wyoming bill of sale.

What is a bill of sale?

A bill of sale is a document that acts as a receipt for a private vehicle sale transaction. It includes information about the car involved in the transfer, including the vehicle identification number (VIN), the make and model of the vehicle, and the purchase price agreed upon by the buyer and seller.
Information about the buyer and seller, along with their signatures, is also included in a bill of sale.
A bill of sale does not substitute as a legal ownership transfer of the car. You will have to complete
a title transfer
to make the sale official since only a certificate of title will legally certify a car’s ownership. A bill of sale, on the other hand, outlines the details regarding the terms of your agreement with the other party involved in the sale.

Is a bill of sale required in Wyoming?

Wyoming requires a bill of sale for any private car sales that are not conducted through an official car dealership. A bill of sale acts as proof of the private transaction, the date of transfer, and the purchase price.

What is required in a Wyoming bill of sale?

Unlike most states, the Wyoming DMV doesn’t provide a sample bill of sale form. Check your county website because some counties, like
Laramie
,
Teton
, and
Natrona
, provide forms that you can use. Otherwise, you will have to draw up your own document.
If you are drafting your own bill of sale, be sure to include all of the following information:
  • Vehicle make, model, year, and VIN
  • Date of transfer
  • Purchase price
  • Name, address, and signature of the seller(s)
  • Name, address, and signature of the buyer(s)
  • Notarization is not required, but it is highly recommended
List the car’s value in place of the purchase price if the vehicle is being transferred to a family member as a gift. And be sure to indicate that the car is being gifted on the document.

What should I do after I get a bill of sale?

First, complete the bill of sale for a car, and then complete a
Wyoming title transfer
. Only a title transfer will legally certify the change of ownership. But your bill of sale will act as a receipt if you need to establish details of the transaction after it is complete.
Make sure you follow
Wyoming’s rules for selling a car
. Sellers typically need to report the sale to the state DMV and turn in their license plates. And buyers will usually need to report the sale to register the vehicle and get new plates.
Always retain a copy of the bill of sale for your personal records. If you encounter legal consequences later on, the bill of sale will prove the terms of your agreement (like the purchase price) with the buyer or seller.
