A short history of Toyota ownership
Toyota Motor Corporation was established in 1937 in Aichi, Japan. Its global headquarters is still located there.
The corporation was founded in 1926 by Sakichi Toyoda as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. Back then, it was a manufacturer of automatic loom machines. Toyoda’s son decided to expand the company’s operations to the auto industry with some encouragement from the Japanese government—which was pushing for domestic vehicle production due to the war with China.
Toyoda produced its first car, the Model AA sedan, in 1936, and the business was incorporated as the Toyota Motor Company, Ltd the following year. The name was changed because “Toyota” has a more pleasing sound in Japanese.
Toyota Motor Company continued to expand and came to the U.S. in 1957. The Corporation took its present name, Toyota Motor Corporation, in 1982 when it was merged with Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd.
Today, Toyota is the largest automaker in the world! It’s certainly come a long way since its loom manufacturing days; although, fun fact, Toyota is still in the loom business, though they’re now all computerized and electric.
