A short history of Mercedes-Benz ownership

Mercedes-Benz has always maintained ownership, acquiring and losing other auto makes over time. Mercedes-Benz has a long history in the automotive industry and claims to have invented the first-ever automobile back in 1888 when it was still called Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft.
The company we call Mercedes-Benz today was first formed by Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, and Wilhelm Maybach in 1926. The founders agreed that their cars would be called Mercedes-Benz to honor the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft’s most important model—the Mercedes.
Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft merged with Benz & Cie. to form Daimler-Benz AG, which eventually began to create subsidiary companies to handle various tasks, like data processing (Daimler-Benz InterServices AG) and real estate management. The company continued growing until a major change occurred in 1998.
In 1998, Daimler-Benz AG merged with Chrysler Group, the smallest of the three American auto companies, and became DaimlerChrysler. The merger was wildly unpopular, however, and didn’t even last for 10 years. Chrysler sold to Cerberus Capital Management, and DaimlerChrysler became Daimler AG.
Under its new moniker, Daimler AG continued to lead the world in the production of luxury cars, with a newfound focus on developing electric vehicle technology. In 2022, the company announced it was rebranding as Mercedes-Benz Group AG to pursue a higher valuation for the company. Today Mercedes-Benz Group AG focuses on developing electric vehicles packed with digital gadgets.
