A short history of Maserati ownership

Maserati was founded in 1914 by the Maserati brothers in Bologna, Italy. In its youth, Maserati focused on manufacturing award-winning race cars. The brand’s career as a race car manufacturer continued until the mid-1930s when the Great Depression led the Maserati brothers to financial ruin, forcing them to sell the company.
From 1937, the brand bounced around between several private owners before finally landing in the lap of Citroen in the late 1950s. It was under Citroen’s ownership that the Maserati brand turned away from producing race cars in favor of manufacturing upscale sedans for the general public.
Maserati was later purchased from Citroen by an entrepreneur and an Italian state-owned holding company. By the 1980s, Chrysler had also purchased a modest stake in Maserati.
In 1993, Maserati became the sole possession of
Fiat
. By 1997, Ferrari, which was also owned by Fiat at the time, purchased half of Maserati’s shares—which is ironic considering that the two brands are widely considered to be rivals today. Ferrari is credited with stabilizing Maserati’s finances and the two officially split in 2005 with Maserati finally generating profits in 2007.
Maserati’s ownership status changed yet again in 2011 when Fiat bought out Chrysler, a company that had been struggling financially for years. The acquisition led to the creation of a new organization called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. FCA became the new parent company of Maserati, leading to record sales for the Italian brand.
In 2021, Maserati changed hands for the last time (so far) when FCA merged with the French PSA Group, forming the multinational corporation Stellantis
