Which Land Rover Has the Best Gas Mileage?

You won’t have to sacrifice luxury or power for efficiency in the 2022 Range Rover Sport PHEV.
Written by Kathryn Kurlychek
The Land Rover with the best gas mileage is the 2022 Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid, although the Evoque and Velar are close on its heels—and you’d be surprised at the efficiency of its hybrid full-size counterparts.
For five generations, the Range Rover has represented modern luxury while remaining versatile enough to appeal to virtually every driver. What they haven’t always been known for? Fuel efficiency. But that’s starting to change.
With the rollout of both plug-in and mild-hybrid electric vehicles in the Land Rover lineup, long-time luxury is steadily gaining an eco-friendly twist. Here to walk you through the best (and worst) Land Rover models for fuel efficiency is

Which Land Rover has the best gas mileage?

The top three Land Rover models for gas mileage are the 2022 Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid, the 2022 Range Rover Evoque mild electric hybrid, and the gasoline-powered
2022 Range Rover Velar
. The combined mileage for each is as follows:
  • 2022 Range Rover Sport PHEV: up to 42 MPGe combined
  • 2022 Range Rover Evoque MHEV: up to 23 mpg combined
  • 2022 Range Rover Velar: up to 23 combined mpg
But let’s break down each vehicle’s performance a little further. Below, we take a closer look at the differences between the latest Range Rover models' mileage, then compare them to Land Rover’s larger Discovery and Defender models to help you make the most informed (and eco-friendly) decision!

The most fuel-efficient Land Rover Performance SUVs

By far, the Land Rover’s most efficient model comes in the form of the 2022 Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (or PHEV). If you’re looking for a midsize luxury vehicle that doesn’t guzzle gas, it’s hard to beat the practicality and real-world range packed into the latest hybrid version of America’s favorite Rover.
With an EPA-estimated 42 MPGe combined, the Range Rover Sport PHEV outperforms its mild hybrid electric cousin by about 19 miles—and it leaves a number the majority of its competitors in the dust, as well. It’s powered by a 143-horsepower electric motor and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, so you won’t have to sacrifice performance for fuel efficiency. And with up to 19 miles of all-electric range, drivers with short commutes may find the Sport PHEV shaves a significant amount of cash off their average fuel costs.
Close behind is the 2022 Range Rover Evoque mild electric hybrid vehicle, or MHEV. Its powerful 2.0-liter engine is propelled by a 48-volt underfoot battery that automatically shuts the engine off and on while idling, coasting, or braking to cut your fuel consumption. That translates to an estimated 23 mpg combined, or 20 city/27 highway miles per gallon
What’s the difference between a PHEV and an MHEV? Simply put, PHEVs (like the Range Rover Sport) come with smaller fuel engines that have the potential of being powered solely by the vehicle’s larger battery pack, while MHEVs (like the Evoque) blend a more traditional fuel engine with electric power.
In general, PHEVs are more fuel-efficient than MHEVs, since they have a capacity for full-electric power that MHEVs lack. But in either case, you’re likely to see greater fuel efficiency from both PHEVs and MHEVs than traditional gas-powered engines.
Still, if you’re committed to an all-gas Rover that maintains fuel consciousness, the 2022 Range Rover Velar sports about the same combined mileage as the Evoque MHEV, with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined. The catch? That estimation is specific to the Velar automatic nine-speed version—in a 2022 Range Rover Velar with an automatic eight-speed or manual transmission, you’ll see slightly lower fuel economy.

Defender vs. Discovery: which SUV is more fuel-efficient?

If you’re looking for a Land Rover with full-size SUV spaciousness, your options are the five-passenger Defender or seven-passenger
Discovery
Both are available with either premium-gasoline-powered engines or mild hybrid electric engines—although the larger Discovery tends to see better fuel economy, no matter the engine you choose and despite its hefty size. Here’s the average mileage you can expect from each:
  • 2022 Land Rover Defender: up to 19 mpg combined
  • 2022 Land Rover Discovery: up to 21 mpg combined
The Discovery is our personal pick for a full-size fuel sipper—and with a starting MSRP of $55,000 (just $7,000 more than the starting price for the Defender), it may be worth the extra money upfront to save on fuel costs in the long run.
