What Kind of Car Does Blade Drive?

Learn about the ultra-cool Dodge Charger that Blade drove in the Blade movies.

Blade, the character played by Wesley Snipes in the Blade movies, really only drove one car—a 1968 Dodge Charger that got him from one vampire-fighting scene to another. It was the perfect “hero” car, the same that Steve McQueen drove in Bullitt.
Some superheroes are synonymous with their cars. Think Batman and the Batmobile or Ghost Rider and his motorcycle. Others, like Blade, tend to drive cars that act as extensions of their personalities. In the case of Blade, a 1968 Dodge Charger was the perfect choice with its intimidating look and exceptional speed and power.

Who is Blade?

Blade is a superhero first introduced by Marvel Comics in the 1970s. A half-human/half-vampire hybrid, Blade is a loner who hunts other vampires using his arsenal of weapons.
To most, Blade was a surprise choice to adapt into a movie, but the character made his big-screen debut in 1998. Starring Wesley Snipes in the titular role, the movie was a surprise hit that would go on to spawn two sequels: Blade II directed by Guillermo Del Toro, and Blade: Trinity, co-starring Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel
While adapting the character for the big screen, the director and producers felt Blade needed a distinct, powerful car. They wisely chose the 1968 Dodge Charger.

1968 Dodge Charger

The 1968 Dodge Charger has been a staple in film and television for a long time. Different model years of this car played supporting roles in many iconic movies and TV shows—The Dukes of Hazzard, Christine, The Fast and the Furious, and Big Fish, to name a few.
This is a classic American muscle car. In 1968, it was called the only true challenger to the Corvette. What it really is, though, is the perfect vehicle for certain movie characters—the loners, the heroes, the anti-heroes, the nomads. It can handle intense action scenes and doesn’t look out of place in a car chase through the streets of San Francisco or through vampire-ridden New York City.
Blade’s Dodge Charger has a stock exterior and originalchrome trim and rally wheels. It also features a stunning hood scoop and a 383 Magnum engine.
The 1968 Charger came with a lot of impressive features, but Blade equipped his muscle car with plenty of customized add-ons, including:
  • UV lights to melt the skin off of vampires
  • Nitrous injection
  • A holster for Blade’s gun with garlic-filled bullets
With his Dodge Charger gassed up, Blade was all set for a night of vampire hunting.

What happened to the real Dodge Charger from the three Blade movies?

Blade had his “hero” car in the first and third entries in the franchise. After Blade: Trinity, the most maligned of the trilogy, wrapped production in 2004, the studio kept the car.
The car only appeared in the first and last Blade movies. Since Blade II took place in Eastern Europe, the Dodge Charger was nowhere to be seen.
Recently, a new Blade movie was announced as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Mahershala Ali is set to don the iconic black leather duster. It’s yet to be revealed if this new reiteration of the Blade character will be racing around the streets in a 1968 Dodge Charger (even though we hope so) or will have a new car specifically designed for the reboot.
