If there’s one thing the Fast and Furious film franchise knows, it’s cars. Superfans of the series will have seen the 2019 spin-off film Hobbs and Shaw, where Jason Statham’s character Deckard Shaw takes the wheel of an incredibly stylish McLaren 720S for one of the film’s most iconic chase scenes.
When a cyber-genetically-enhanced villain threatens to destroy the world as they know it, Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham) must form an unlikely alliance to save the day in Hobbs and Shaw.
An iconic piece of their heroic journey sees Statham’s Shaw take the wheel of a McLaren 720S sports car as the team tries to evade the film's supervillain Brixton Lore (played by Idris Elba). Brixton and his henchmen pursue the McLaren on Triumph Speed Triple RS motorbikes.

No Fast and Furious film is complete without a handful of high-adrenaline car chases, and one of Hobbs and Shaw’s most famous car chase scenes involves the duo behind the wheel of a 2019 McLaren 720S.
If its sleek and stylish exterior wasn’t enough to turn up the McLaren’s screen appeal, its real-world capabilities make it the perfect model for a car chase. Featuring the performance capabilities of a Formula 1 race car, the McLaren 720S boasts a 710-horsepower twin-turbo V8 powertrain and a paddle-shifted seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
As Shaw steers himself, his sister Hattie (played by Vanessa Kirby), and Hobbs through London’s crowded streets, the performance capabilities of the McLaren 720S are on full display—no movie magic necessary. The sports car’s world-class steering and surprising dexterity allow our trio of heroes to swerve in and out of heavy traffic and narrow alleyways to evade Brixton and his henchmen.
In addition to powering from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 2.7 seconds and reaching max speeds of 212 mph, the car’s relentless stopping power also allows the team to stop, change direction, and speed off again at a moment’s notice.
Two seats, three passengers
Regardless of the McLaren’s top-tier performance capabilities in Hobbs and Shaw, and regardless of Shaw’s masterful handling of the 720S, it’s hard not to notice how tightly the three characters are crammed into the sports car’s two-seat cabin.
Only 76.0 inches wide and boasting a super small passenger volume of 47 cubic feet, it's a wonder how Statham, Kirby, and especially Johnson—who is 6’5” and weighs 260 pounds—all manage to squeeze into the cabin of the McLaren. Director David Leitch, however, confirmed to Cinema Blend that the trio did, indeed, fit into the sports car during filming.
Leitch went on to describe how he originally wanted to play up the physical comedy of Dwayne Johnson’s massive stature compared to the McLaren but eventually cut the gags from the film, saying that they didn’t match the mood of the scene.

More cars from Hobbs and Shaw
Shaw’s iconic McLaren 720S might be one of the most memorable cars to grace the screen in Hobbs and Shaw, but it is far from the only one. Here are some of the other show-stopping vehicles that are featured in the 2019 flick.
2020 Jeep Gladiator
When Hobbs drives Shaw to Samoa, he does so in the 2020 Jeep Gladiator
—the first pickup manufactured by Jeep since they discontinued their XJ-based Comanche two-door pickup in 1992. Drivers hoping to replicate the scene will find that the mid-size crew-cab pickup boasts a 3.6-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Ford Bronco
While Hobbs’ go-to brown Ford Bronco
might seem like a tame ride compared to the hot rods that populate the rest of the film, the SUV’s appearance in the opening scene speaks to its durability as a Hollywood staple. In addition to its appearance in Hobbs and Shaw, the Ford Bronco can be spotted in a number of Hollywood action blockbusters including Speed, Charlie’s Angels, The Chase, Ocean’s Eleven, and Terminator 2. 2017 Aston Martin DB11
While Aston Martin models might have been made famous by their appearance in the James Bond films, they have continued to be scene-stealing cars in a range of other Hollywood movies—including Hobbs and Shaw.
