No Fast and Furious film is complete without its fair share of street racing and car chasing. The franchise’s third installment, Tokyo Drift, sees its protagonist, Sean Boswell, take the wheel of several sports cars, including a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
, a 1967 Ford Mustang
, a 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
, and more. No matter which Fast and Furious movie you sit down to watch, you can rest assured that your screen will be populated with dozens—if not hundreds—of spectacular, show-stopping, and highly modified speedsters. Tokyo Drift is no exception.
In the 2006 film, Lucas Black plays Sean Boswell, an outsider who defines himself through his success as a street racer. After his high-adrenaline hobby gets him into trouble with the local authorities, however, he is forced to relocate to Tokyo to live with his father. Unfortunately for Sean, Tokyo brings with it the allure of a high-stakes form of street racing that soon sees Sean going head-to-head with ‘The Drift King,’ a local street racing champion.

2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
Throughout the film, Sean takes on the Drift King and a number of other street racers behind the wheel of a few different cars. But Sean’s most iconic sports car, and the real hero of the film, is his highly-modified 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
. While the Lancer Evo IX’s 0 to 60 mph start-time of 5.6 seconds and top speed of 155 mph alreadymake it fast enough to qualify as a Fast and Furious vehicle, director Justin Lin called for a few upgrades to really make the Mitsubishi a scene-stealer. By disconnecting the Lancer’s front wheels from the drivetrain, Lin was able to give the sports car the drifting capabilities that give the 2006 film its name.
Additional upgrades to the Lancer included rear springs and a PR white body kit to provide an oversize fender. Modified steering knuckles gave the Mitsubishi an additional angle, and the brakes were upsized using Brembo discs and calipers.
Retaining its front-mounted turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the Tokyo Drift crew outfitted the Lancer with an additional RMR exhaust system that ramped up the sports car’s overall horsepower output to 286.
2000 Nissan Silvia S15
Originally owned by Han (played by Sung Kang), the Nissan Silvia S15
used in Tokyo Drift was later handed over to Sean to use in a race against the Drift King. The Silvia was the first car Sean raced with after arriving in Tokyo and—spoiler alert—it ultimately loses him the race. With its blue-and-orange paint job, the effortlessly sporty Silvia needed far fewer modifications than Sean’s iconic Lancer Evo. The Tokyo Drift crew did, however, outfit the S15 with a near-stock looking C-West DRFT Aero Kit, a C-West supplied GT wing, and a set of Ganador mirrors prior to filming. They also added 19-inch Volk GT 7 rims to the same Toyo Proxes TR1 tires as the Lancer Evo IX.
With an equivalent max speed of 155 mph, the Nissan Silvia S15 is milliseconds faster than Sean’s Mitsubishi, with a 0-60 mph start time of 5.4 seconds, comparedto the Lancer’s 5.6 seconds.
The Nissan Silvia S15 features a 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder turbocharged SR20DET engine that pumps out a maximum of 250 hp @ 6,400 rpm.

Start earning now1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Used in the film’s opening, Sean ultimately totals his vintage 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
as a result of his dangerous driving habits. While its performance in the film is less than spectacular, we are willing to bet that that has more to do with Sean’s driver error than with the car’s actual capabilities. Nine Monte Carlos were used in the making of Tokyo Drift, with a variety of powerful engines under their hoods. One of the engines gave the vintage sports car an impressive 560 hp and a 0 to 60 mph start time of 4.4 seconds. Another engine churned out a show-stopping 700 horsepower on set.
1967 Ford Mustang
The final race car used by Sean in Tokyo Drift is his 1967 Ford Mustang
. The Mustang used for filming had been upgraded with a 2.6-liter twin-turbo engine plucked from a 2001 Nissan Skyline RB 26 and a five-speed transmission taken out of a 1998 Nissan Skyline 2WD. The V8 Mustang that Sean raced to the end of Tokyo Drift offered our hero an impressive 375 hp and a speedy 0 to 60 mph start time of 6.7 seconds.
