background
Matthew McConaughey once said, “My life is like a road, man. I need to keep moving.” With cars ranging from classic Camaros to a luxury SUV, there’s no doubt this acclaimed actor is moving in style.
Throughout his long career, Matthew McConaughey has taken on a variety of roles. But whether he’s playing a gritty detective or interstellar spaceship pilot, his characters remain rugged and authentic. The same can be said for the actor's assortment of vehicles.
Matthew McConaughey’s cars might not be as numerous or flashy as other big-screen names, but they’re practical enough to give any driver a sense of serenity. Ready to be dazed and confused by the car collection of your favorite Texas-born celebrity? Strap in—we've got a full list of what Matthew McConaughey drives.

GMC Yukon XL

A
Yukon SUV
might feel a little lukewarm for a celebrity this well-known. But considering McConaughey’s fondness for the GMC brand—and that the actor
lived in a converted GMC van
back in the 90s—it’s not much of a leap.
And that’s not a bad thing. Despite a bulky exterior, the Yukon XL packs a beastly engine. 420 horsepower, a V8 automatic transmission, and nearly 8,000 lbs of towing capacity are standard. Drivers can purchase the AWD option and premium add-ons for increased comfortability.
Another standout feature of the Yukon XL is its spacious seating, allowing for up to nine adults. Space is a must for a family man like McConaughey, and the XL has more than enough for his wife and three children.
The GMC Yukon XL goes above and beyond in the categories you’d expect from a full-size SUV. Luxury doesn't come cheap, though. A base RWD 2022 GMC Yukon XL will set you back $55,200. On the other hand, the more premium
Denali
configuration starts at $71,800.

1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

It’s hard to find a better encapsulation of McConaughey’s love for vintage cars than Mako—a 1971 Ocean-Blue
Chevrolet Stingray
McConaughey drove during the early 2000s. Yes, that’s Mako like the shark.
Though we’re not covering all the vehicles the actor owned, Mako is special for its rich history and incredibly cool vibe. Stingrays, in particular, are a staple of celebrity car collections from
President Biden’s
‘67 Stingray to
Robert Downey Jr’s
‘65 edition.
Looks aren’t everything, though. The 1971 Corvette Stingray offered plenty of power, from 5.7-liter V8 engines to a maxed-out 425 horsepower. McConaughey could definitely afford to keep the vehicle but gave up Mako in 2006
auctioning off the car on eBay
to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Originally, Mako was McConaughey’s go-to vehicle for trips to Mexico—but in his own words about charity: “as soon as you're done, it feels like a vacation from the inside out.”
Fun Fact Matthew McConaughey's Stingray sold for $61,100, supporting 65 families affected by Katrina for over a year. That's about half the cost of a modern Stingray.

1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Alongside a slew of “comfort vehicles,” McConaughey also owns a 1981
Chevrolet Camaro Z28
. This classic muscle car is enough to put a smile on the face of any auto enthusiast, but what's more impressive is the story behind it.
Pat, Matthew McConaughey's older brother, used to drive a Z28 back in high school. He’d even let his little brother take the wheel when their parents weren't home—forging the bonds of brotherhood in the dust of a V8. The Camero was a dream for McConaughey. It came true on the actor’s 40th birthday when his soon-to-be-wife Camila Alves gifted him the vehicle.
McConaughey's love for this classic muscle car went past sentimentality, though. The 1981 Camaro Z28 is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V8 engine—capable of producing 175 Horsepower and 280 lbs of torque. The Z28 trim offers a foam-backed interior, better hydraulics, and sportier suspension.

Custom Airstream RV

Perhaps the most peculiar of the collection is McConaughey's Airstream RV. The custom build includes a full-size table, built-in barbeque, and windowed bedroom nicknamed the honeycomb. Oh, and did we mention the handcrafted kitchen?
The airstream has seen plenty of journeys over the years, but nowadays, it spends most of its time parked near Malibu Beach. An obvious reason is McConaughey's love of surfing and general respect for the outdoors.
At just 28 feet long, you could argue the airstream is “too small” for a celebrity of McConaughey's stature. But, then again, the actor lived in it exclusively for nearly four years—so we’d say he’s pretty cozy.
Rumor has it that the fleet is expanding. McConaughey has ordered two additional Airstreams and is considering opening an Airstream exclusive hotel.

2016 Lincoln MKX

All right, all right—all right already. We know we couldn’t publish an article about Matthew McConaughey’s love of automobiles without discussing Lincoln. McConaughey has been talking about Lincolns since 2014 when he became the company's philosophically waxing spokesperson. And yeah, if you can’t tell already, he’s a fan.
While we don’t know much about McConaughey’s
2016 Lincoln MKX
, the premier trim is nothing less than the peak of vehicle luxury—touting buttery soft leather, 22-way power-adjustable massage seating, and a panoramic moonroof. Under the hood, the MKX offers a 3.7-liter V6 engine and front-wheel drive transmission for quick pick-up.
The real draw, though? Experiencing the same luxurious comfort as a suit-and-tie McConaughey
staring down a bull
from behind the wheel. “Taking the way, huh? I can respect that.”
According to the ads, McConaughey's been driving Lincolns “long before anyone paid him to.” While that’s likely true, we can’t imagine how much of an upgrade the 2016 MKX must have been from his previous rides.
Fun Fact Many Lincoln ads starring Matthew McConaughey were directed by the acclaimed Icelandic Cinematographer Wally Pfister, credited with films like the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception. Must have been quite the budget!
