Even the most keen-eyed car enthusiasts and Stranger Things superfans have had trouble determining exactly what kind of car Billy Hargrove drives in seasons two and three of the smash Netflix hit. The best guess is that the effortlessly cool vehicle is a 1979
Chevrolet Camaro Z-28
One of the defining traits of Stranger Things’ bad-boy antagonist Billy is that he drives a Camaro—a car that is just as noisy, attractive, and impressive as he is. An integral part of Billy’s character arc from his first appearance at the start of season two, Billy’s
Chevy
meets its demise in season three. And in parallel plotlines, Billy does too.
Here's everything you never knew about Billy Hargrove’s hotrod and other cars from Stranger Things

Late-1970s Chevrolet Camaro

We are first introduced to Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things as he noisily peels into the high school parking lot behind the wheel of a late-1970sChevy Camaro. Blaring The Scorpions’ hit song “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” the mulleted cigarette-smoking troublemaker immediately sets himself apart as both a heartthrob and a car enthusiast in the 1980s-era science-fiction series.
While the car certainly has unique characteristics, even gearhead fans of the show have debated the exact make and model since it first appeared in season two. The consensus seems to be that the hotrod is most likely a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28.
This assumption is motivated by identifiable features such as the front clip. However, eagle-eyed Stranger Things fans claim that the clip appears to be an addition, as opposed to an original feature.
Fans have also argued over the exact model, as the hood on Billy’s supposed Z-28 doesn’t seem to be original either. It doesn’t help that Billy’s model was
debadged
before appearing on screen.
The Chevy Camaro Z-28 is certainly a fitting vehicle for Billy—it makes an immediate impression. With a 350-cubic-inch, 185-horsepower V8 engine, a four-barrel carburetor, a large front spoiler, and fender flares, Billy’s Camaro is as powerful and sexy as he is.
The Z-28’s Frankenstein appearance may also hint at Billy’s own conflicted nature. He’s introduced as an antagonist controlled by the Mind Flayer, yet he eventually saves our band of heroes by sacrificing himself to the monster at the end of season three.

More cars from Stranger Things

Billy’s 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 is far from the only impressive vintage car to grace Netflix’s original series. Here are a few other notable vehicles seen on the streets of Hawkins,
Indiana
in Stranger Things.

1980 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

Chief Hopper’s police truck is a 1980 Chevrolet K5 Blazer. Like Hopper, the
Blazer
is a little rough around the edges yet proves more than capable of taking on the Demogorgon, Mind Flayer, and a host of superpowered teens.

1976 Ford Pinto

Joyce Byers’ Ford Pinto appears throughout Stranger Things, as well. The affordable and practical Pinto makes perfect sense for a single mother of two who is struggling to get by. Plus, its metallic green paint job and instantly recognizable appearance reflect Joyce’s quirky personality almost too well.

1980s BMW 733i

Steve Harrington’s BMW is an impressive ride for a rural-Indiana high schooler, but the 733i’s flashy appearance is a fitting mirror to Steve’s outgoing personality. After carrying Steve and the gang through Stranger Things’ first three seasons and taking down Billy’s Z-28, the BMW 733i is sadly destroyed during the Battle of Starcourt in the third-season finale, where it is crushed underfoot by the terrifying Mind Flayer.
