Here's everything you never knew about Billy Hargrove’s hotrod and other cars from Stranger Things.
Late-1970s Chevrolet Camaro
We are first introduced to Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things as he noisily peels into the high school parking lot behind the wheel of a late-1970sChevy Camaro. Blaring The Scorpions’ hit song “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” the mulleted cigarette-smoking troublemaker immediately sets himself apart as both a heartthrob and a car enthusiast in the 1980s-era science-fiction series.
While the car certainly has unique characteristics, even gearhead fans of the show have debated the exact make and model since it first appeared in season two. The consensus seems to be that the hotrod is most likely a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28.
This assumption is motivated by identifiable features such as the front clip. However, eagle-eyed Stranger Things fans claim that the clip appears to be an addition, as opposed to an original feature.
The Chevy Camaro Z-28 is certainly a fitting vehicle for Billy—it makes an immediate impression. With a 350-cubic-inch, 185-horsepower V8 engine, a four-barrel carburetor, a large front spoiler, and fender flares, Billy’s Camaro is as powerful and sexy as he is.
The Z-28’s Frankenstein appearance may also hint at Billy’s own conflicted nature. He’s introduced as an antagonist controlled by the Mind Flayer, yet he eventually saves our band of heroes by sacrificing himself to the monster at the end of season three.
