As of September 2022, the fuel excise tax in Washington State is $0.49 per gallon. But under legislation set to go into effect on January 1, 2023, the state gas tax will jump to $0.95 per gallon.
It’s been a rough year for gas prices nationwide, and the west coast has had it worse than many other parts of the country. Though prices have come down as of late, it’s still pretty expensive to fill up your tank and is likely to remain that way—especially in Washington State, where fuel taxes are among the nation’s highest.

Senate Bill 5126
—passed in 2021, this bill is part of an
ambitious package of legislation
that is aimed at cutting emissions in Washington State by up to 50% in the next nine years. It’s a wonderful goal, of course, but it comes with a downside.
As of January 1, 2023, Washington State’s gas tax will increase by $0.46 to a whopping $0.95 per gallon. That’s not the end of it—the tax will continue to rise, with the goal being a total increase of $0.80 a gallon by 2030
The aim of this is to drastically cut emissions, which is a massively important priority on a global level—but takes a major toll on Washingtonians’ wallets.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Washington?

Not so much. President Biden had proposed a national gas tax holiday in the summer of 2021, but the bill never got out of committee and is not likely to see the light of day. He called on the states to enact a gas tax holiday at a local level, but Gov. Inslee was
not on board with it
Unfortunately, not only is there no sign of gas tax relief in Washington, they’re set to almost double in 2023. Feeling the urge to go shopping for hybrid or
