Some 2022 Volkswagen Tiguans come with optional third rows to boost their seating capacity to seven people.
Even if it's noticeably less frilly than some of its competitors, the Tiguan SUV offers plenty of room to haul your spouse, kids, and even a few of their friends to and fro. But before you make a beeline to the closest dealership, you’ll need to know this VW’s capacity to ensure it’s right for you.

How many seats does the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan have?

A third row of seating is available on the two lowest Volkswagen Tiguan
trim level options
, the base S trim and the
SE
. As such, these models can seat up to seven occupants. The higher-level
SE R-Line Black
and SEL R-Line trims are both only available with five seats.
On the two lower trims, the Tiguan’s interior is a bit unexciting—yet practical and stylish in a minimalist sort of way. Heated seats come standard even on the base trim, as do partial-power adjustable front seats. You’ll have to upgrade to one of the two higher trims to get full-power seats, a faux-leather interior, and a panoramic sunroof, though.
If you opt for the third row of seats, your interior cargo space will be very small. The five-seat Tiguan, on the other hand, has average space for its class.

Do all Tiguans have three rows of seats?

Nope—just the S and SE trims have the option to add a third row of seats. Still, that third row isn’t very roomy—there are just 27.9 inches of legroom. All told, the third row is suitable for kids only.
If you still aren’t sure if the Tiguan is for you, have no fear. We have detailed specs below to help you decide whether this SUV is the family hauler you need.

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan interior

The Tiguan isn’t the fanciest SUV interior you’ll park yourself in, but it's practical, good-looking, and has plenty of technology features. Things get a bit cramped in the rear, though, especially if you draw the short straw and are forced to sit in the third row of seats with your nephew.
With that third row, the Tiguan’s cargo space shrinks to just 12 cubic feet, which isn’t much. With both sets of rear seats folded down, the Tiguan’s cargo space is in the middle of the pack vis-a-vis its competitors.

Dimensions

The Tiguan’s first and second rows are perfectly roomy and suitable for all but the most long-limbed adults. But if you find yourself in the third row, you’ll likely wish you had decided to walk to your destination.

Cargo space

Cargo space is a weak spot for the Tiguan. With all seats folded down, the Tiguan offers just 65.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which sits squarely in the middle of its class of SUVs.
If you fold only the third row of seats down, the Tiguan has 33 cubic feet of space, which isn’t very helpful. With all three rows of seats up and in use? You’ll get just 12 cubic feet of space. That may be enough room to stuff your misbehaving youngest child… but even that will be tight.
(Side note: please don’t stuff your youngest child in the rear cargo hold, no matter how poor their behavior.)
If you need more cargo space but want to stay within the cozy confines of the Volkswagen family, the seven- or eight-seat
Volkswagen Atlas
could be an option. It’s a bit more expensive than the Tiguan ($8,000 more when comparing base trim levels), but with all three rows folded down, you get an ocean’s worth of space in the Atlas—98.6 cubic feet, to be exact. With all seats in use, you still get a decent 20.6 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold.

Which other Volkswagen vehicles can seat eight people?

Speaking of the Atlas, it’s the only other VW in the game when it comes to seating between seven and eight occupants. The Altas’ interior is downright cavernous, with plenty of space even in the third row, which is comfortable and roomy enough to seat fully grown adults.
If you don’t want to seat too many people, or your children simply demand their own seats, you can opt for the Atlas’ optional second-row captain’s chairs, which will cut the capacity down to seven (but may ensure peace between your dear children).
Cargo space is solid in the Atlas, and there are plenty of clever storage nooks and crannies—not to mention a bunch of convenient cupholders. Add the Technology Package and you’ll get an extra USB port in the rear, too.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
