How large is the gas tank on a Volkswagen Tiguan?

For the 2023 and 2022 model years, the size of the gas tank on the Volkswagen Tiguan depended on whether it’s equipped with front- or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive Tiguans have a gas tank capacity of 15.9 gallons, while front-wheel drive versions have a slightly smaller 15.3-gallon tank
This is also true for the 2018 to 2020 model years. The 2021 Tiguan is a bit of an anomaly, with a 15.9-gallon tank for the front-wheel drive and 16.4-gallon tank in the all-wheel version.
The tank size difference between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive seems to stop with the 2017 model year, which has a gas tank capacity of 16.9 gallons across the board. Tiguans from 2013 to 2016 have a slightly smaller tank at 16.8 gallons.

How to check your Volkswagen Tiguan’s gas tank size

If you’d like some additional ways to suss out what the size of your Tiguan’s gas tank is, we’ve got you.

Bust out the measuring tape

If hands-on evidence is your thing, then you can measure the capacity of your tank yourself. Take the dimensions of your tank in inches (length, width, and height) and multiply those numbers together to get the tank's volume in cubic inches. Now take that number and divide it by 231.
The result is your tank’s capacity in gallons. What’s the significance of 231, you ask? It's the number of cubic inches in a gallon. Remember that—it might come in handy at pub trivia some evening.

Unearth the owner’s manual

You know it’s around somewhere…you swear you just saw the thing. If you can locate your owner’s manual, it should have the capacity of your gas tank in the specifications.
Edmunds
is also a trustworthy source for car specs.

Take a drive on the wild side

If you like to keep things interesting, you can try this route. Drive your Tiguan until it’s as empty as your nerves can handle, and then fill it up and see how many gallons it takes. Just don’t press your luck too far!

How to save on gas with a VW Tiguan

Depending on whether or not you have front or all-wheel drive, you can expect to get a combined 24 to 26 mpg with your Tiguan. To really maximize your mileage and make every gallon count, here are a few gas-saving tips:
  • Maintenance matters! Shirking routine maintenance may save you some expense in the short run, but it ends up costing you more in the end. Well-maintained engines are more fuel efficient, not to mention having longer life spans in general.
  • No, Speed Racer, No! Slow and steady not only wins the race, it’ll save you money as well. Jackrabbit starts may be amusing, but they’re not great for fuel economy.
  • Idling engines are the devil’s playthings. Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But idling does burn a lot of gas, so try to avoid it whenever possible.
