The
Volkswagen
Jetta SE is a solid, affordable, and roomy economy car that boasts an impressive ride for a vehicle that is decidedly bare-bones. The Jetta SE is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower. However, it does not come with a V6 option—the only VW with a V6 is the seven-passenger Atlas SUV.
Volkswagen has built a remarkable brand of German vehicles that delivers style, reliability, practicality, and affordability. Yet, V6 engines are very uncommon for VW, which opts for more fuel efficient and reliable 1.5, 1.8, and 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engines—with the Jetta SE being no exception.
Of course, if you’re dying for a VW with a V6, you’re going to have to upgrade significantly. The Atlas is the lone VW offering a V6 engine. But with a starting price of $35,530,the Atlas is a significant jump from the Jetta SE’s starting price point of $25,090.
Want to learn more? Here's a quick guide to alternatives to the Jetta SE for you, since this practical sedan doesn’t offer a V6.
Since the Jetta SE you’re eyeing doesn’t offer a V6 engine, what to do? You can always look for an alternative, though the pickings are sparse for V6 engines at the Jetta SE’s price point. Still, there are options.
One comparable alternative is the Toyota Camry XLE,a compact and reliable sedan that’s a bit more expensive than the Jetta SE, but not much, starting at $33,935. Unlike the Jetta SE, the Camry offers a 3.5L V6 engine with 301 horsepower, along with a smooth and composed ride, plenty of storage space, and responsive handling.
Another option—if you’re willing to forego the family and indulge in an adult-friendly sportscar—is the
Camaro
, which starts at around $25,000 and offers a 3.6L V6 engine with 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. Granted, the Camaro is in no way as practical as the Jetta SE, but it's got a big, powerful V6 engine. The kids can just take the bus, right?
Now, if they can’t take the bus, you could opt to stay within the VW family with the seven-passenger
Atlas
, which boasts a V6 engine and 276 horsepower. The Atlas has plenty of room and provides a refined and remarkably quiet ride.
