How to check for road closures in Utah

Road closures are frequent in Utah. After all, much of the state snows during the winter months, making driving conditions tricky.
UDOT (Utah Department of Transportation)
contains all the information you need to know about road closures in Utah. You can check the
current conditions
tab on UDOT’s website or visit UDOT’s
traffic website
, which gives you real-time notifications of road closures, construction, and traffic.
Better yet, follow UDOT on

Nine Utah roads that close in the winter

There are nine roads scheduled for
seasonal closures
in Utah. Closures typically happen from November through May or June, depending on the weather.

1. SR 36 Monte Cristo (east of Ogden)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 9,030 feet
This route runs from US-6 in Juab County north to I-80 in Tooele County. The road is a popular destination for road bikers, so if you make it onto this route, be sure to keep an eye out for bicyclists!

2. SR 65 East Canyon (northeast of Salt Lake City)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 7,420 feet
SR 65 gets groomed periodically from December to February. This road, connecting I-80 and I-84 in northern Utah, sees lots of snow enthusiasts in the winter months—whether it be snow-shoers, snowmobiles, or snowboarders.

3. S.R. 190 Guardsman Pass (Brighton to Park City)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 9,717 feet
In the Wasatch Mountains in northern Utah, this high mountain pass sees regular road closures in winter due to heavy snowfalls.

4. S.R. 224 Guardsman Pass (Park City to Midway)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 9,740 feet
The Park City to Midway section of Guardsman Pass also sees regular closures in winter due to snowfall. If you can catch it in the fall before the November closure, try to snap some pictures—visitors rave about the fiery fall foliage!

5. S.R. 92 American Fork Canyon / Alpine Loop

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 8,000 feet
This scenic drive is spectacular in the summers—but it’s best (and easy) to avoid it in the winters during hazardous conditions since it’s usually closed.

6. S.R. 150 Mirror Lake Highway (east of Kamas to near the Wyoming border)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 10,715
As Utah’s highest paved road, you should expect Mirror Lake Highway to see closures in the winter due to snowfall. Check it out in warmer months for a great view of the High Uintas!

7. S.R. 35 Wolf Creek Summit (east of Francis to west of Hanna)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 9,493 feet
A popular biking route in Utah, expect to see bicyclists during warmer months when the road isn’t snowy or closed.

8. S.R. 153 Mount Holly (east of Beaver above Eagle Point Resort)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 9,200 feet
As Utah’s fifth-highest paved road, you can expect closures for heavy snowfall on this route in the winter.

9. S.R. 148 Cedar Breaks National Monument (east of Cedar City)

Closed from: November through May or June (depending on weather)
Highest elevation: 10,000 feet
This national monument is full of great snowshoeing, skiing, and hiking trails—but you’ll have trouble getting here in the dead of winter when roads are closed.

FAQs

For sure! You just need to be prepared. Get a car with
snow tires
—especially if you’ll be driving frequently in northern Utah where snowy conditions are frequent.
It’s also a good idea to always carry snow equipment for driving—chains for your tires and an emergency kit in case you get stranded on a snowy road.
There isn’t a dedicated app, but you can stay up to date on Utah road conditions through the
UDOT website
or
UDOT Twitter account.
