2022 Toyota Tundra ground clearance by trim level

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to building a Toyota Tundra—from lowest to highest, here’s the height each trim level will put you above the road:
Even though they share a 3.5L displacement, Toyota’s hybrid i-FORCE MAX engine raises the truck higher than the V6 i-FORCE. It also has the edge when it comes to power, turning out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque over the usual 391 hp and 479 lb-ft. Perhaps the secret lies in the specialized off-road suspension of the TRD Pro Hybrid, which adds 1.1 inches of extra clearance to the front of the vehicle.

Toyota Tundra ground clearance over the years

Looking at photos over the years, it’s clear the pickup trucks of the early 2000s were leaner beasts. It’s only when the Tundra gained extra features that it also began to pack on the pounds. Modern, boxy styling trends certainly don’t help. The journey through the Tundra’s ground clearance specs over the years is a gentle downhill slope:
  • 1st generation, XK30 (2000 to 2006): 10.4 to 12.3 inches
  • 2nd generation, XK50 (2007 to 2021): 10.2 to 10.6 inches
  • 3rd generation, XK70 (2022 to present): 9.3 to 10.9 inches

Why you should care about ground clearance

If you plan on off-roading difficult terrain, you need extra ground clearance, a measurement of the space between your vehicle’s chassis and the ground below. Generous ground clearance helps you avoid damaging your car’s undercarriage. In other words, it tells you the maximum height of the obstacles you can clear.
Aim for a ground clearance of 6.6-8.7 inches for gravel, 8.8-9.4 inches for over-landing, and at least 10.8 inches for rock crawling. Every trim level of the Tundra will see you safely across gravel, but you should opt for the TRD Pro if you plan on tackling serious challenges. A used first-generation Tundra can also serve you well. And remember, a higher suspension means a higher center of gravity—watch yourself on sharp turns or you could roll over!

Is the Toyota Tundra a good off-road vehicle?

Yes, but it’s no mountain goat. With the shortest chassis riding 9.3 inches off the ground and a gross weight of over 7,000 lbs., it doesn’t climb obstacles so much as charge over them. The price tag also packs a punch: starting at $37,645, it’s more expensive than either the
Jeep Wrangler
or the
Ford Bronco
. Still, you can’t fault the Tundra for its size when you consider the amount of off-roading features packed under the hood.
All trims come standard with engine and body undercovers, plus a Tow/Haul mode for dragging a maximum of 12,000 lbs. In the cab, Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) technology regulates wheelspin by automatically adjusting throttle and traction control. For extra bumpy rides, turn on Crawl Control to manage your throttle and brakes on low gears while you concentrate on steering. Both systems are included in the TRD Off-Road package (starting at $2,410) for lower trims with four-wheel drive. It also comes with Xply Armor (reinforced engine and fuel undercovers).
The TRD Pro trim level includes all of the above, plus oversized 2.5-inch FOX shocks, a front stabilizer bar, and an aluminum skid plate. If you have the room in your budget, there are few workhorses more rugged than a fully tricked-out Toyota Tundra.
