For the all-wheel-drive models of the 2022 Toyota Sequoia, you’ll have 10 inches of ground clearance in all trim levels except for the Platinum, which has 9.6 inches to work with. Rear-wheel-drive models also lose about 0.1 inches of clearance.
If you set aside Jeeps and Land Rovers, the Toyota Sequoia offers some of the most ground clearance in the full-size SUV segment!

  • Limited
    : 10.0 inches
  • Nightshade: 10.0 inches

It’s important to note that these specifications are for all-wheel-drive (AWD) models, which can be applied to all trim levels for about a $3,000 upgrade. The base rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models lose about 0.1 of an inch, bringing their ground clearance down to 9.9 inches for the majority of trim levels.

Toyota Sequoia ground clearance over the years

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia marks the end of a nearly 15-year run for the second-generation models. Ground clearance has remained pretty consistent over the years, and things don’t seem to be changing as we head into the third generation in 2023—but we’ll have to wait for the official specification sheet to be released.
Here are the Sequoia’s specs for ground clearance over the generations:
  • 1st generation (2000–2007): 10.0 to 10.6 inches
  • 2nd generation (2008–2022): 9.6 to 10 inches
  • 3rd generation (2023 onwards): TBD, est. 10 inches
Throughout the Sequoia's tenure and into today, the Platinum trim level sets the bottom half of the range while the AWD models push the upper half.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance is the distance between the lowermost part of your car and the ground—this could be the chassis, bumper, or some other portion of the car’s underbody.
But why does it matter? Well, having ample ground clearance can help you navigate a tricky driveway dip or drive over debris on the road without making contact. Any sort of irregular impact can result in severe damage to your vehicle and a potentially expensive trip to the mechanic.

Is the Toyota Sequoia a good off-road vehicle?

Considering 8.8 inches is the minimum amount of ground clearance recommended for off-roading, the Toyota Sequoia is highly capable of conquering your dirt road adventure. However, the TDR Pro trim is more than capable, it’s designed specifically for off-roading.
The Sequoia TDR Pro is the only trim where AWD is standard instead of optional. Other features include a roof rack, a front skid plate, upgraded FOX shocks, and a maximum towing capacity of 9,000 lbs—making it an excellent vehicle for your weekend camping trip (or whatever you ask of it)!

Having additional ground clearance can help you avoid a crossing raccoon, but no amount of clearance can account for a deer with poor timing. Fortunately, having proper

will keep your vehicle protected from these unfortunate instances.
