The Best BMW Station Wagons

BMW doesn’t produce station wagons anymore, but the Subaru Outback and the Audi A4 Allroad are two of the best on the market.

BMW no longer manufactures station wagons, but there are still some worthwhile models on the market. Some of the most notable ones include the Subaru Outback, the A4 Allroad, and the Volvo V60.
BMW only released one station wagon in the U.S. and took it off the market in 2019. Station wagon enthusiasts shouldn’t worry, though—other brands have produced models with modern designs while maintaining the benefits of this type of vehicle (durability, storage, additional passenger capacity, and more).
If you’re shopping for a station wagon and had your heart set on a BMW, don’t fret.

Does BMW still make a station wagon?

BMW was never a major player in the station wagon game. That said, the only model they ever offered, the BMW 3-series Wagon, was considered to be competent, practical, and even somewhat stylish.
Thanks to the innovative design of newer station wagons, many confuse them with
hatchbacks
. In fairness, these vehicle types have a similar look and offer some of the same benefits. The current designs of each car type make it even tougher to tell them apart sometimes.
Some of the differences include:
  • Hatchback roofs tend to dip less past the rear passenger doors than station wagons
  • Most hatchbacks only have two pairs of windows whereas a station wagon typically has three sets of windows.
  • Station wagons are typically longer than most hatchbacks. This creates more interior space for cargo and/or passengers.
  • A hatchback is designed more like a car with a trunk whereas most station wagons have an SUV-like tailgate.
  • Station wagons emphasize cargo volume
  • Station wagons usually accommodate an extra row of seating
Both vehicle types have their benefits and drawbacks. If you’re in the market for one, you should review which offers the passenger room, cargo space, and safety features that you want.

The best station wagons you can buy

While you might have a hard time finding a BMW station wagon to buy, there are still plenty of options available. Some are better than others, and here are three of the best:

2023 Subaru Outback

Starting price: $42,395
Passenger volume: 108 cubic feet
Cargo volume: 73 cubic feet with seats down
Engine: 182-hp 2.5-liter (standard) or a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter (optional)
With plenty of cargo space and an intriguing set of tech features, the
Subaru Outback
is a frontrunner for the best station wagon. It’s designed with practicality and has a rugged exterior and generous
ground clearance
, making it ideal for long drives and camping trips.
Its appearance gives it something of an SUV feel. Furthermore, it has off-road capabilities, more so than your standard station wagon, and comes standard with all-wheel drive.
The current iteration of the Subaru Outback has some interesting alterations:
  • Front-end includes a larger grille
  • The headlamps have been updated
  • A new front bumper
  • Better cameras with a wider field of view
Equipped with power, the Outback gives drivers the option of upgrading to a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4 liter.

Audi A4 Allroad

Starting price: $46, 595
Passenger volume: 92 cubic feet
Cargo volume: 58.5 cubic feet
Engine: 2.0 L 4-cylinder
The
A4 Allroad
has some impressive features: stunning design, excellent performance, and the ability to load more cargo than the A4 sedan. Another exciting aspect of this station wagon is its additional ground clearance, which is reminiscent of many SUVs.
This station wagon also features many “car-like” qualities. With a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, the A4 Allroad offers a nice mix of all-weather capabilities and power while the interior has more than enough room for both passengers and cargo.

2023 Volvo V60

Starting price: $48,000
Passenger volume: 5 passengers
Cargo volume: 60.5 cubic feet with rear seats down
Engine: In-line, 4 cylinder
Named to Car and Driver’s Editor’s Choice list, the V60 is practical, sleek-looking, and offers a variety of safety and tech features. It is a clear rival to the Audi A4 Allroad and the larger V90 Cross Country.
Larger than a small hatchback, this compact station wagon is a nice ride for those who are intimidated by SUVs. They ride lower, weigh less, and even handle better than SUVs of a similar size.
Volvo
is known for its great interiors, and the V60 is no exception. The cabin is spacious, comfy and with a touch of luxury. It features a minimalist design that makes it look more upscale than the price suggests. In addition, there is a ton of cargo space for those long road trips
