How to get a disabled parking placard or plate in Oklahoma

Oklahoma drivers have three options when it comes to legally parking in handicap spaces. You’ll need to display one of these items on your vehicle:
  • A temporary placard, issued for a maximum of 6 months
  • A permanent placard, issued for 5 years
  • A disability license plate tag, issued for 1 year to people who already have a permanent placard
Both the placards and license plates will include the International Symbol of Access (ISA), which you may recognize as the white stick figure in a wheelchair. This same image marks handicap parking spaces and other resources.
Don’t let this confuse you, however—you do not need to be in a wheelchair to qualify for a temporary or permanent placard, or even for a disability license plate tag in Oklahoma.

Who’s eligible for a disabled parking placard?

In order to qualify for a temporary or permanent placard, you must meet at least one of the following requirements at the time of application:
  • Can’t walk 200 feet without needing to rest
  • Must walk with assistance from a brace, cane, crutch, another person, prosthetic device, wheelchair, or another assistant device
  • Have restricted breathing—either 1) have forced (respiratory) expiratory volume of less than 60 mm/hg for 1 second on room air at rest or 2) be prescribed portable oxygen
  • Have Class III or Class IV functional limitations as defined by the American Heart Association
  • Have a severely limited ability to walk due to an arthritic neurological, or orthopedic condition, or complications due to pregnancy
  • Are certified legally blind
  • Have impaired mobility due to one or more missing limbs
A physician, physician assistant, advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP), osteopathic physician, chiropractor, podiatrist, or optometrist will have to sign your application certifying that you meet one of the above requirements.
A temporary disability will qualify you for a placard that is valid for up to six months, while a permanent disability will qualify you for a 5-year placard. Once you have a 5-year placard, you have the option of applying for a license plate with a disability tag.

Renewing a disabled parking placard

Guidelines for veterans with disabilities

If you’re a disabled veteran who holds a permanent placard, you may be eligible for a specialty Disabled Veterans Plate. To qualify, you must have a disability that is at least 50% related to injuries suffered while on U.S. military service.
To apply for a Disabled Veteran Plate, fill out the appropriate application form and send it to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, along with a letter from the VA stating your eligibility, insurance verification form, and the appropriate fee ($6.50 for in-person pickup, or $9.50 to have the plates mailed to you).
Key Takeaway In addition to standard handicap placards, disabled veterans in Oklahoma may qualify for specialty Disabled Veterans Plates.
