Required documents for obtaining an Oklahoma driver’s license

Drivers who are seeking a license in Oklahoma need to be at least 16 years of age before they can get one. To start the process, you’ll need to bring the following documents to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Proof of identity

You will be required to present proof of identity, which must be an original or a certified copy. Examples of documents you could use include:
  • Valid, unexpired Oklahoma driver's license or state ID card
  • Birth Certificate from the state where you were born
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
  • Valid, unexpired permanent resident card
  • Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship
  • Valid, unexpired employment authorization document (EAD)
  • Valid, unexpired foreign passport with a valid US visa and a valid DHS I-94.

Proof of residence

You'll need two documents that show proof of residency from the last year. Here are some items you can provide to show that you live in Oklahoma:
  • Any mail delivered by USPS, FedEx, or UPS
  • Utility bill (water, electric, cell phone, etc.)
  • W-2 or any type of 1099
  • Oklahoma voter registration card
  • Copy of lease signed by both tenant and property owner
  • Insurance policy or statement (homeowners, renters, auto, life, etc.)
  • Property tax statement

Other requirements

To apply as a disabled
veteran
, you need to provide a photo of your Sales Exemption Card and either the original document or a certified copy of proof from the Department of Veteran Affairs.
You'll also need your Social Security Number. A physical Social Security Card is best, but you just need to be able to recite your SSN.

Oklahoma learners permit

It gets a little complicated for drivers under 18. You’ll need to be at least 15 years and six months of age and appear before a
Driver's License Examiner
in order to obtain your
Oklahoma provisional license
. You can also apply for a permit if you are over 18 years old, but it is not required.
To get your learner’s permit, you’ll also need to bring:
  • A parent or guardian if under 18
  • The same documentation that is needed for licensure
  • Documentation of driving instruction if under the age of 16
Drivers under 18 must hold their permit for six months. Licensed drivers over 18 need to hold their permit for 30 days before applying for a license.

Passing your Oklahoma driving test

If you’re under 16 in Oklahoma, you’ll need to complete a driver’s education course from your public school or a commercial driving school, or have a parent-taught driver’s education affidavit.
If you are 16 or older, you do not need to take a driving course. However, if you are enrolled in such a course or have completed a course, bring the documentation to prove it.
You'll then have to take a vision test at the DMV. You'll pass if you can see 20/60 or better with or without glasses, or if you can see 20/50 or better in one eye.
You also have to pass a written test. There are fifty questions on safe driving and the driving laws of Oklahoma. You can retake the exam for $4.00 as soon as the next business day if you don't pass the first time.
The last element is the road test. To take this test, you will need to provide proof of automobile liability insurance and perform the test with an
approved designated examiner
.

Rules for driving under an Oklahoma minor license

Oklahoma has implemented additional rules for drivers under the age of 18 to ensure their safety on the road. Here are a few important rules:
  • Supervised driving: Drivers with a minor license must be accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and has maintained a valid driver's license for at least two years.
  • Driving curfew: You are only allowed to drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. There may be exceptions for work, school, or essential activities.
  • No cell phone use: Oklahoma has strict rules that say young drivers
can't use their phones at all while driving
, even if they are hands-free. The only exception is to call the police in an emergency.
  • Always wear your seat belt: This is also fairly standard, but all
Oklahoma passengers must wear seat belts
. Buckle up to keep yourself and those around you safe!
  • No alcohol consumption: When you're a teen driver, there's no legal limit—if you're caught with even a trace of alcohol in your system, you'll likely lose your license and face more penalties.

Transferring an out-of-state license to Oklahoma

You can easily transfer your out-of-state license to the state of Oklahoma. You’ll need to bring the following to a Driver Exam Site:
  • Primary ID: usually a birth certificate, but other documents are accepted as well
  • Your out-of-state license
  • Social Security number
  • Documentation of name change (if applicable)
If you’re a college student whose permanent address resides outside of Oklahoma, you don’t need to change your driver’s license. You also don’t need to switch your ID if you are a member of the military and you’re currently stationed in Oklahoma.

Can international driver's permits or licenses be used in Oklahoma?

If you are just visiting Oklahoma from another country, you can drive legally with a valid international driver's permit or license.
But if you want to move to Oklahoma from another country and live there full-time, Oklahoma does not accept foreign licenses or permits.

Types of Oklahoma driver’s licenses

There are five types of licenses available in the state of Oklahoma:
  • Class A (Commercial)—A Class A commercial license allows the holder to operate any combination of vehicles weighing 26,001 pounds or more. The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the towed vehicle should be greater than 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B (Commercial)—A person with a Class B commercial license can drive any vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, as long as the GVWR of the vehicle being towed doesn't go over 10,000 pounds.
  • Class C (Commercial)—A Class C commercial license lets the holder drive any single vehicle that is made to carry 16 or more people or hazardous materials.
  • Class D (Regular)—A person with a Class D regular license can drive cars, RVs, trucks, fire trucks, and other non-commercial vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or less.
  • Class M—You’ll need either a Class M
    Oklahoma motorcycle license
or a motorcycle endorsement.—but to get a motorcycle endorsement, you need a current license for another type of vehicle.
