  • Your new license will be sent by mail.
  • Commercial driver licenses (CDL) have unique considerations.

When to renew your driver’s license in Oklahoma

Expiration: Most Oklahoma driver's licenses expire every four years.
As of 2021, you can request an 8-year driver's license when you renew, but you’ll pay double for this option.
Renewal: You can renew
up to a year
ahead of the expiration date—but the Oklahoma DPS recommends you do so at least 60 days ahead of time.
To find out when you need to renew, check the front of your card for the expiration date listing. The date will be under the yellow star on the top right corner of the card.
The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety will issue a reminder 45 days before your license is set to expire—but this reminder is only found on their website, so you may miss it if you’re not checking there regularly.

How to renew your driver’s license in Oklahoma

Depending on the circumstances, you can renew your
Oklahoma driver’s license
in three ways:
  • Online
  • In person
  • By mail.
If your license has been expired for some time, your driver license number may change upon renewal.

Renew your license online

There are very few restrictions on online driver’s license renewal in Oklahoma. Just head to the
renewal or replacement portal
on the official Oklahoma government website and create a My.OK.GOV account.
You’re eligible for online renewal if
  • Your license is in good standing with the state of Oklahoma
  • You do not need a change of address
License renewal fees: $38.50 for drivers under 62
If you are over the age of 62, you’re eligible for a discounted renewal fee of $21.25. The cost will go down by an additional $4.25 every following year so that by age 65, renewing your license is completely free!

Renew your license in person

You can also visit your local Service Oklahoma location to complete your renewal in person.
Use the list of official
locations
on the Oklahoma government website to find the closest location. We recommend calling ahead to confirm that the tag agent is authorized to renew licenses.
Bring two forms of identification documents with you when you go to renew
  • Primary identification (like a certified birth certificate, current license, or U.S. passport)
  • Secondary identification (like a social security card or health insurance ID card)
If your license has been expired for more than one year, you’ll need to bring proof of residency in Oklahoma. More than two years will require you to retake your written test and road test.
If you recently had a name change and this is your first time getting an official document with your new name, bring a document that can prove your identity.
For non-U.S. citizens: Instead of going to the Tag Agency, you’ll need to go to a
Driver’s License Exam site
with your license and an immigration document. The same $38.50 fee applies for a standard license renewal but expect extra fees if you have to retake your driver’s exam.
Once the renewal is complete, your new license will be sent to you by mail.

Renew your license by mail

You can renew your license by mail if:
  • You're an Oklahoma resident who is temporarily living out of state
  • Your license is not expired and is in good standing
Your first step is compiling a packet of documents, including:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Proof of Oklahoma address
    (must be residential)
  • Out-of-state address
  • A copy of your primary identification
  • A copy of your secondary identification
  • Payment for the $38.50 renewal fee payable to the Department of Public Safety
Once completed, mail your packet to the following address:
Department of Public Safety
Driver License Services, Renewal by Mail
PO Box 11415
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73136
The new license will arrive by mail to your Oklahoma residential address once your packet has been processed.

How long is my grace period for an Oklahoma license renewal?

Grace period: 60 days
You have a 60-day grace period after your license expires in which you retain your driving privileges. If you are on active duty, you get 60 days from your discharge date.
After this grace period is up, you’ll face additional late renewal fees.
If you want to avoid retaking your driving test or taking a vision test, make sure you renew less than two years after the expiration date.
Driving with an expired license
carries hefty penalties ranging from fees to jail time, so don’t delay!
