The Best Nissan Station Wagons

The Nissan Murano is the only Nissan station wagon you can buy new.

Even though Nissan doesn’t technically produce a station wagon, the EPA classifies the Nissan Murano as one—making it the only Nissan station wagon you can buy new.
Station wagons are hard to come by nowadays. What was once pretty common is now going the way of the dodo bird, with the much-loved SUV taking over this segment. But the station wagon remains overlooked as it offers the driveability of a sedan with extra cargo and passenger space, with a price tag that doesn’t scare you away.
The Nissan Murano is one vehicle that should be in your sight if you’re thinking about buying a station wagon since it is, technically, considered a station wagon.

Does Nissan still make a station wagon?

In a way, yes. Even though the Nissan Murano looks like an SUV, the EPA classifies it as a station wagon.
But this isn’t Nissan’s foray into the station wagon space. There was once a vehicle named the Nissan Primera Wagon that made its debut in 1990. It had a huge trunk capable of carrying loads of groceries, luggage, you name it. In fact, the trunk space was twice as large as that of the standard Primera.
Nissan discontinued the Primera Wagon in 1997 due to poor sales, which was perhaps a sign of things to come as SUVs started taking over.

What’s the difference between a station wagon and a hatchback?

Have you ever wondered why a station wagon gets that moniker? Here’s what defines a station wagon:
  • A longer body than a sedan or hatchback
  • Extended passenger/cargo space accessed by a liftgate
  • Typically includes a D-pillar
  • Prioritizes cargo volume
Station wagons and hatchbacks differ from sedans because they are two-box designs, which means seating and storage are blended. Sedans are three-box vehicles because they have separate engines, passenger seating, and storage compartments.
Hatchbacks, on the other hand, are likely to have a more gentle rear slope and shorter body because they prioritize style over storage. Station wagons tend to be boxier in nature to accommodate more storage and the occasional third row of seating.

Nissan station wagons you can buy right now

Now that we know what makes station wagons so versatile and unique, let’s take a look at one still on the market today: the
Nissan Murano
.

2022 Nissan Murano

Starting price: $34,535
Passenger volume: 103-109 cubic feet
Cargo volume: 31-32 cubic feet
Engine: DOHC 24-valve V-6
If the Murano has anything going for it, it’s that it has one of the most well-equipped cabins on the market today—which is certainly saying something for a station wagon.
But that’s where the kudos end. The Murano is one of the older station wagons on the market with an engine that doesn’t exactly rev us up. If you’re looking for value, the Honda Passport and Hyundai Santa Fe are better options.
One place where it does shine is in fuel economy. It gets 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which lands it high on the list of its rivals. And although it doesn’t blow you away in other departments, there’s something to be said for the five-star safety rating from NHTSA, which is partly due to:
  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
With an engine that underwhelms and nothing else in the way of bells and whistles that makes it stand out among the competition, you’re better off looking for an actual SUV as that vehicle type will tend to include more of what you want.

The best Nissan station wagons of all time

Nissan Cube

Production years: 1998-2019
Price range: $1,360-$5,689
Cargo volume: Up to 58 cubic feet
Worst year: 2010
The
Nissan Cube
came rife with complaints. This boxy wonder saw transmission failure and steering issues pop up pretty regularly. And with a reliability rating that was middle-of-the-pack, at best, it wasn’t taking home any awards for most durable Nissan vehicle.
The Cubes were powered by 1.3-liter engines, which did nothing to help this aerodynamic-challenged vehicle race down the highway. The fact it stuck around for more than two decades has to be a wonder in and of itself.

Nissan Sentra Station Wagon

Production years: 1989-1990
Price range: N/A
Cargo volume: Up to 24 cubic feet
Worst year: 1989
You don’t see these on the road these days—and for good reason. Nissan stopped selling them in 1990 even though the nameplate lives on today as a compact car.
The station wagon experiment didn’t last long, But what’s old is new again as these vehicles are starting to become collectibles for reasons we don’t understand. They all come with a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter automatic that doesn’t exactly fly down the highway, but it does the job, which is to drive back and forth to the grocery store.

Are Nissan station wagons reliable?

Nissan ranks pretty high in the reliability category. RepairPal gives the brand a 4 rating out of 5, ranking it as above average
Why did Nissan not score a 5? High repair costs. Most of the complaints about the Nissan Murano are very expensive to fix. These are not your run-of-the-mill vehicles, either. RepairPal estimates repairs typically cost about $500 annually, while Edmunds suggests five-year maintenance costs running to about $1,898—not a drop in the bucket.
If you are looking for a station wagon for the family, the Nissan Murano isn’t going to wow you. Crossover SUVs will likely be less expensive to buy and maintain.
