Rising gas prices have plagued all U.S. drivers in the past few years, but New Mexico is doing its best to combat these high prices. Still, even with one of the lowest gas tax rates in the country, New Mexico has seen a rise in gas prices just like every other state. So, how does the gas tax work, and are there any tax relief options?

How much is the New Mexico gas tax?

As of September 2022, the excise tax on gas in New Mexico is $0.17 per gallon of unleaded gasoline. Excise tax refers to any tax imposed on a manufacturer of a good, service, or activity, meaning the gas station is charged this tax before you even enter the parking lot.
On top of the excise tax, there is also an additional tax of $0.02 per gallon. This is the petroleum loading fee, which is charged at the point of sale based on how much gas you buy. This brings the total payable gas tax in New Mexico to $0.19 per gallon.
Keep in mind that diesel fuel has a higher excise tax of $0.21 per gallon, bringing the total payable gas tax on diesel fuel to $0.23 per gallon.

Are there gas tax relief options in New Mexico?

With the gas tax rate already sitting so low, it’s pretty unlikely that the New Mexico gas tax will change in the coming year. In fact, this idea is pretty low on the list of economic relief priorities in New Mexico right now.
With that being said, gas tax relief is already being offered to New Mexican citizens in the form of tax rebates. In 2021, these rebates went to the following demographics:
  • Married couples filing jointly (up to $500 in rebates)
  • Heads of household and surviving spouses with an adjusted gross income of up to $150,000

How high are gas prices in New Mexico?

Currently, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in New Mexico is
$3.646 per gallon, but this number may not reflect the actual cost of gas in your city.
In Santa Fe, for example, the average gallon of gas costs $3.678, which is pretty close to the average price of $3.672 that you’ll see in Albuquerque. In Roswell, however, it’s just $3.599 for a gallon of gas, and in Las Cruces, it’s only $3.527. If you venture out to Raton, you might see even a gallon for as low as $3.369.
In short, gas prices really depend on where you are, even if the gas tax is the same all over the state.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
