If you are moving to
New Mexico
from another state, you’ll need to surrender your license and bring proof of residence to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). If you’re just relocating from one New Mexico address to another, you can make the change online or by mail.
Moving tends to be equal parts exciting and stressful, with plenty of hoops to jump through during the process. One of the more forgotten steps of a move is letting both your insurance company and your state's MVD know that you’ve relocated.
We're here to break down how to change your New Mexico address at the MVD and why your insurance company needs your new address, too.

How to change your address on a New Mexico driver’s license

Changing your address with the New Mexico MVD isn’t all that difficult, although the process differs depending on where you lived previously.
Anyone who is already a New Mexico resident can update their address online. But if you’re coming from out of state, you’ll need to make the trip to the MVD office in person.

If you’re moving within New Mexico

Whether you’re going from one city to another or just moving a few blocks over, you need to let the New Mexico MVD know that your address has changed. You have up to 10 days to do so.
The three ways you can inform the MVD of your move are:
  • Online: Most people’s preferred way to change their address is to do so through the
    online portal
    .
  • In-person: If you want to update the address on your license, the only way to do so is in person. Keep in mind you’ll have to pay a fee of either $18 or $34 depending on how long you want the license to remain valid.
  • By mail: If you’d prefer, you can fill out
    this form
and either fax or mail it to the New Mexico MVD.
If you’re sending your address change information by mail, you should address it to:
MVD Data Entry Unit
P.O. Box 630
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87504-0630

If you’re moving to New Mexico from another state

If you are moving to New Mexico from another state, you won’t have the luxury of completing your address change online. Instead, you’ll have to make your way to an MVD office after you’ve moved in.
  • Be ready to pay a fee of either $18 or $34 depending on how long you want your
    New Mexico driver's license
    to remain valid
  • While at the MVD, you’ll need to turn in your old license
  • You’ll also need to provide documents that prove both your identity and your
    residency in New Mexico
  • Even if you already have a driver’s license from another state, you’ll still have to pass New Mexico’s eye test
If you own a car, you’ll need to
update your registration
. This can also be completed at the New Mexico MVD, assuming you can provide both the title and an odometer reading. The cost to register a vehicle in New Mexico may vary, but be prepared to spend at least $27.

Other steps for a New Mexico change of address

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division isn’t the only organization you should inform when you move.
To avoid any type of mailing confusion and to update your voter registration,
use this form
to let the United States Postal Service know that you’ve changed your address.

How to notify your insurance company of your New Mexico change of address

Additionally, you’ll need to get in touch with your car insurance company after you move—even if you are changing your in-state address.
Some insurance companies will require you to call an agent to change your address, while others will allow you to do so online.

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Everyone’s rates are different when it comes to car insurance, and where you live is a big reason why. If you don’t let your car insurance company know you moved, you could get in serious trouble as it might be considered fraud.
If you’re moving to New Mexico from out of state, letting your car insurance company know immediately is even more important. Each state’s minimum coverage requirements differ, so your old coverage might not adhere to
New Mexico's car insurance requirements
.
If you don’t have the minimum car insurance needed in New Mexico, you could face a fine of up to $300 and your license could be suspended.
