After the September 11 attacks, the U.S. passed a number of new laws intended to strengthen national security. Following the release of the 9/11 Commission Report, the REAL ID Act
in 2005 was signed into law. The act set new rules and guidelines for identification documents which included driver’s licenses. Enforcement has taken a long time, but that is set to happen in 2023. Who needs a REAL ID?
Starting on May 3, 2023, a REAL ID will be required in order to:
Enter certain federal buildings
Gain entry to nuclear power plants
Get on commercial flights that are federally regulated (this includes domestic flights)
Maybe you are employed inside a federal building or have been itching to tour a nuclear power plant, but if not, then you don’t need to worry about those first two. If you plan to continue using your New Hampshire driver’s license to pass through TSA checkpoints on domestic flights, however, then by May 2023, you must switch to a REAL ID-compliant license.
Be aware that you’ll still be permitted to present other forms of identification to board a flight, like a passport, even if you choose not to get a REAL ID-compliant license by the deadline. For the complete list, check out the TSA website
