What are Nevada license plates and why do I need them?

Nevada license plates are basically IDs. You’ll receive your plates after you register your vehicle with your local DMV—the plates are proof of
vehicle registration
and fee payment. They also are a tool for identifying your vehicle and tracing ownership.
Why would you want your vehicle to be ID’d? There are plenty of reasons. Here are two: if you get into an accident, license plates help to determine who’s at fault. What happens if your vehicle is stolen? Your license plate can help authorities look up your stolen vehicle.
Nevada law
requires front and rear license plates tobe displayed at all times. There is an exception for motorcycles and trailers. These vehicles only require one plate in the rear. Vehicles designed to display two plates or that can add on a front bracket must display two at all times—no exceptions.
However many plates you’re required to display, the choice of plates is entirely yours. Keep reading to learn more about your options.

What license plates does Nevada have?

Most Nevada license plates are standard issue. Standard Plates in Nevada are the default option—the pale blue plate with an abstract mountain range reading ‘HOME MEANS NEVADA.’ As far as Standard Plates go, Nevada drivers lucked out.
That said, there are some Specialty Plate options worth exploring before you commit to the classic. Nevada organizes these specialty options into six categories:
Below we feature a few popular choices from Nevada’s current lineup of available plates.

Charitable and collegiate plates

  • Childhood cancer: Use your plate fee costs for good. When you purchase this license, $25 of the initial fee and $20 of each renewal fee is donated to the
    Rare Disease Advisory Council
of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, which fights to eliminate childhood cancer.
  • Desert conservation: A portion of your initial and renewal fee is donated to the
    Clark County Desert Conservation Program
when you purchase this plate, featuring a friendly tortoise.
  • UNR collegiate: Be true to your school! This plate illustrates Wolf Pack pride and some of its fees are donated to academic and athletic scholarships at UNR.

Classic vehicle plates

  • Classic Vehicle/Rod & Old Timer: Show off your classic or antique status on a Nevada standard plate.
  • Retired military: No matter your vehicle’s country of origin, if it’s an authentic military vehicle with its original markings, it can sport this tough gray license.
  • Vintage: if your ride was built before 1961, you can order a plate replica of the one issued during your vehicle’s year of manufacture.

  • Volunteer firefighter: This warm orange plate featuring a firefighter at work supports volunteer training by the State Fire Marshall with its fees.

Veterans plates

  • All veterans & families: Veterans and their families can sport this white plate, and some of the proceeds are donated to the Nevada Department of Veteran Services.
  • Fallen military: If you lost a loved one during their service in the Armed Forces, you are eligible for this plate, featuring an eagle above our flag.
