As of October 2022, the state of Nevada charges a gas tax of $0.23 per gallon. This is collected in addition to any county and federal taxes that may be assigned to gas purchases.
Gas prices can fluctuate by the day. But have you ever wondered why prices can vary so much from state to state? Part of the reason is a difference in gas taxes. Although the federal government assigns their own tax to gasoline purchases, it also allows state governments to assign an additional tax.
Here to discuss the details of Nevada’s gas tax rates is

Nevada car insurance costs

How much is the Nevada gas tax?

Nevada’s gas tax for the 2022 to 2023 fiscal year is $0.23 per gallon. Diesel is taxed at an even higher rate of $0.27 per gallon.
This is in addition to federal motor fuel excise taxes, which are collected from the manufacturer by the IRS and are used to support the Federal Highway Administration. The current federal tax rate is $0.184 per gallon.
Finally, local counties are able to assign their own gas tax, and the exact rate varies from locality to locality across the state.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Nevada?

In June 2022, President Joe Biden called on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for three months to lower rising gas prices. And while many state lawmakers instituted some sort of relief or tax suspension, Nevada did not participate.
In fact, Nevada state law requires that Nevada's tax on motor vehicle fuel would have to be increased if the federal government reduces or discontinues its own tax.
Of course, the tax rate could be reevaluated and potentially lowered for future fiscal years—but that’s admittedly unlikely.

How high are gas prices in Nevada?

According to
AAA
, Nevada has an average gas price of $5.442 per gallon as of October 2022. This is compared to the current national average of $3.910 per gallon, which implies that NV’s rates are quite high.
The price listed above is for regular unleaded gasoline. Mid-grade and premium varieties cost even more—$5.697 per gallon and $5.895 per gallon, respectively.
Unfortunately, trends show that Nevada’s gas prices are on the rise. A month ago, a gallon of regular unleaded gas cost an average of $4.861, and a year ago a single gallon averaged at $3.878.
Of course, the exact price you’ll pay varies by county. Take a look at the average price per gallon for each NV county:
  • Washoe: $5.888
  • Humboldt: $4.723
  • Elko: $4.485
  • Pershing: $5.895
  • Lander: $4.539
  • Eureka: $4.779
  • White Pine: $4.622
  • Carson City: $5.516
  • Douglas: $5.714
  • Lyon: $5.400
  • Mineral: $6.189
  • Nye: $5.209
  • Lincoln: $4.849
  • Clark: $5.432
Part of the reason for the difference in price by county is because counties are allowed to assign their own gas taxes.
