How to replace a lost driver’s license in Montana

Aw shucks—you’ve just lost your license! Best case scenario it’s been misplaced, worst case scenario you’ve been robbed, but in any case, you’ll want to act fast. Ordering a replacement driver’s license as soon as possible will get you back on the road in no time.

Replacing a lost Montana license online

Replacing a lost Montana license can only be done online if your license is eligible for renewal (six months before expiration). Visit the
MVD online service website
and select renewal to complete this task.
The website will run through the documents you must correctly fill out. Your renewed license will be sent via mail—arriving between two to three weeks later.
Frequent flyers, however, should consider an in-person visit, as Montana’s online license renewal program only applies to standard licenses and not REAL IDs. Beginning May 2022, a REAL ID-compliant license will be a requirement for domestic flights.

Replacing a lost Montana license in person

An in-person visit is your best bet for quickly replacing a Montana driver’s license. MVD offices are some of the busiest in the state, so we recommend
scheduling an appointment online
.
Once you arrive at your local MVD office, explain to the agent that you need a replacement license. To complete the transaction, you must provide the following:
  • A primary proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, etc.)
  • A secondary proof of identity (marriage certificate, Social Security card, etc.)
  • Payment for the $10.30 replacement fee
  • Valid mailing address
You may either provide two primary identification documents or one primary and one secondary. Make sure you check out the
complete list of accepted MVD identity documents
. Contact MVD customer service with any additional questions.
Once your application is complete, you can expect an official license replacement to arrive by mail—within two to three weeks.
