When to renew your driver’s license in Minnesota
Minnesota class D driver’s licenses are good for four years, and they expire on your birthday, rather than the date of the original application.
If you are turning 21, make sure not to renew until three weeks before your birthday to avoid having the “under 21” stamp on your license.
The Minnesota DVS will notify you by mail when your license is coming up for renewal. Don’t put it off—renewing even a day late can result in extra fees and extra tests.
How to renew your driver’s license in Minnesota
Minnesota only allows you to renew your driver’s license in person. Mail-in renewal is allowed only for active-duty military stationed out of state and residents who are out of state at the time of renewal.
Renew your license online
Minnesota does not currently offer driver’s license renewals online. Boo.
Renew your license by mail
If you are out of Minnesota and need to renew your license, you are permitted to do so via mail. You must request a special Out-of-State renewal packet by calling or emailing the DVS. If emailing, make sure to include your full name, date of birth, and mailing address.
Make sure you follow all instructions on the packet and fill out all forms completely. You will need to have your application notarized.
If you are on active military duty (or the spouse of someone who is) and you are stationed outside of Minnesota, you do not need to renew your license until you are discharged, regardless of the length of duty. If you want to keep your license active, you may do so by requesting an Out-of-State renewal packet from the DVS.
Renew your license in person
This is the way that the vast majority of Minnesota drivers will renew their licenses. Here’s what to do:
- Bring your current driver’s license and Social Security number.
- Be prepared to take a vision test.
- Look sharp for your new picture!
