What are Michigan license plates and why do I need them?

Michigan license plates are identification for your car. They verify that your vehicle is registered and insured.
Michigan license plates are issued by the Secretary of State. Since 1981, only rear license plates are required. The state requires drivers to replace their license plates every ten years.
License plates are extremely important—as important as your driver’s license and registration! In some cases, they can help police track stolen vehicles. So let’s unpack the different types of license plates available in Michigan.

What license plates does Michigan have?
