If there’s ever a time when you need to figure out your vehicle’s gas tank size all by yourself, there are three relatively simple ways of doing so.
Measure the gas tank
If you have a measuring tape, access to the actual gas tank, and a bit of mathematical know-how, you can multiply the width, length, and height of the tank and divide the result by 231 (the number of cubic inches in a gallon).
Check your owner’s manual
Whenever you have a question about your vehicle’s specs, your owner’s manual should be your go-to. Look for phrases like “fuel tank capacity” or “gas tank capacity” in the index to make your research go a little bit faster.
Drive till empty, then fill it up
This method is a little bit risky, but it’s a pretty brainless way of approximating your fuel tank capacity. Drive until your car is as empty as possible (just don’t stall!) and then fill your tank up until it’s back on “F.” The gas meter will tell you how much gas you purchased, providing a pretty close estimation of what your vehicle can hold.
