Replacing a lost Massachusetts license online

Visit the
RMV online portal
with the following information on hand:
  • Last name
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number, or
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Email address
You will also need to pay $25 to complete the transaction and should receive your replacement driver's license in seven to ten days.

Replacing a lost Massachusetts license in person

If you can’t file for a replacement license online, then you can do so in person. To note, do not go to an RMV Service Center, as they cannot replace your license.
AAA members can make a reservation to replace their license at any AAA location. Simply
visit their website

Remember, if your license is set to expire in less than a year, you can actually renew it instead of replacing it.
Lastly, once you order a duplicate license, you cannot cancel or return it

What if you lose your Massachusetts license out of state?

If you lose your license after moving to another state, the process usually calls for you to get a replacement in your home state before applying for one in your new state.
The same goes for
suspended licenses
. Typically, you can not apply for a license in a new state if you have a suspended license in another state. All states have access to the National Drivers Register and will check it whenever someone applies for a new or replacement license.
In this case, you may have to work toward
reinstating your license
before obtaining another in a different state.
