Maine Gas Tax

With a fuel tax of 30 cents per gallon, it’s pricier to fill up your tank in Maine than in other states.

The gasoline tax in Maine is $0.30 per gallon, which is higher than the national average.
Mainers already bear the brunt of higher taxes—the average Maine resident, for example, supports about three times more road miles compared to nearby Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Add in a pandemic, a small labor force, and tourism-based economic fluctuations, and the gas tax makes the financial landscape for most residents even rockier.

Read on, it’ll be a gas!

How much is the Maine gas tax?

Maine’s gas tax rate is 30 cents per gallon. Additionally, the federal 2022 gas tax is 18 cents per gallon, meaning Maine drivers pay 48 cents for each gallon of gasoline added to their tanks.
Gas prices were already on the rise in early 2022 as many drivers began returning to the roads following two long years of COVID-19 lockdowns. Combined with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a national push to switch to biofuels, the fuel squeeze has become tighter than ever—and Maine citizens are feeling it.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Maine?

Following President Biden’s proposal for a “federal gas tax holiday” in June 2022, Maine legislators got to work on drafting a gas tax suspension of their own. Rep. Laurel Libby proposed a bill to suspend the state gas tax for the remainder of 2022—while Gov. Janet Mills considered the suspension, it did not advance in the legislature
While we have yet to see if any other gas tax suspensions are on the table for consideration, Maine residents may at least receive a break from gas taxes in the form of $850 relief checks. The first checks were mailed out in June 2022.
