What are Louisiana license plates and why do I need them?

License plates are like identification for your car. They verify to law enforcement that your car has been properly registered, help in solving crimes, and help to determine ownership of vehicles. With the sheer amount of cars on the road today, being able to identify them all is an important need!
Louisiana does not require front plates
on your vehicle. Most states do require plates on the front and the back, however, so if you are moving, make sure you check the regulations of the state where you’re headed.

What license plates does Louisiana have?

Louisiana has 10 categories of plates to choose from, and a plethora of options under each category. The current standard Louisiana license plate is an image of a pelican on a  yellow and orange gradient background with black letters.
If you’re interested in something different, you can take a look at all the available options through Louisiana’s
special plates viewer
Here’s a brief overview of the different categories (some have been combined here for simplicity’s sake):
  • Military veteran—Plates in this category span many military branches, campaigns, and honors, including Afghanistan Campaign Veteran, Pearl Harbor Survivor, and Global War on Terrorism.
  • Retired veteran—If you’ve retired from a branch of the US military, you are eligible for one of these special plates.
  • Korean War, Desert Storm, or Vietnam veteran—Veterans of these wars are eligible for a plate that is specific to the war fought and the branch served in.
  • Universities and colleges—Almost two dozen colleges and universities have specialty plates, including Loyola, LSU, Tulane, and Southern Law Center.
  • Organization/services—A wide variety of great plates are in this category, from Amateur Radio Operator to Mardi Gras krewe the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club. Are you a realtor or the owner of a vintage street rod? There’s a plate for that!
  • Special interest—If you have a cause you care about and it’s not represented by the above category, then you’re sure to find it here. From promoting environmental and social causes like saving bees or wild dolphins to breast cancer awareness to repping the fact that you love Louisiana seafood, this category has it all.
  • Louisiana high schools—If you want to show some pride in your Louisiana High School, there are almost two dozen plates to choose from.
  • Sororities and fraternities—Show off your Greek affiliation with a license plate featuring the crest and colors of your fraternity or sorority.

How can I personalize my Louisiana license plate?

If you’d like to give your special plate the added touch of a personalized ID number, you can do that, too! A personalized plate will cost you an extra $25 annually in addition to your regular registration fees, and there is a one-time $11.50 administrative and handling fee as well.
Personalized plates are on a first-come, first-served basis and have some
specific regulations
as far as what you can and can’t write on one—such as no patented logos, amateur radio call signs, or offensive language. You can
check online
