Can you remove the second-row seats from a Lexus GS?

Yes, though it’ll take a little effort. These seats aren’t designed to be taken in and out like those of a minivan, so make sure you’re being extra careful when you’re taking them out.
Let’s go over some safety tips before you remove your second row of seats:
  • Double-check the airbags. There’s a possibility that the side airbags won’t work properly after you remove the second row of seats. Make sure everyone in the car is using their seatbelt and consult the owner’s manual to ensure the airbags will still be effective.
  • Throw a tarp down. After you remove the seats, there will be some exposed metal brackets on the floor. Covering them with a rug or tarp will keep your cargo out of harm’s way.
  • Hang on to the bolts. Should you decide to reinstall the second row of seats, you’ll need the same equipment you took out to put it back in. Store any bolts and plastic covers for future use.
If you only need more space temporarily, you can fold down your rear seats instead.

How to remove the second-row seats from a Lexus GS

  1. Locate the bolts underneath the seat. You’re looking for four bolts in total—two in the front under the passenger footwell and two in the back.
  2. Use a Torx bit. Use the Torx bit to unscrew the nuts from the bolts in the front and the back. You might need some elbow grease here.
  3. Remove the bolts. Now that you’ve loosened the nuts and freed the bolts, pull them out and safely store them somewhere in case you want to reinstall the seats.
  4. Lift the seats out of your GS. First, pull straight up. Then, carefully carry the seats out of your car. This will help prevent the seats from snagging on exposed metal.
  5. Get rid of the debris and add a floor cover. It’ll look a little different back there without the row of seats. A rug or tarp will cover the exposed floor nicely.
If you find your Lexus GS has clips instead of bolts, you’ll have to use a lot of force to pull the plastic clip from the metal iron that holds it in place. Don’t be nervous! They’re designed to be pulled apart.

How do you put the back seats down in a Lexus GS?

If you don’t need quite as much extra space, simply folding down the rear seats is much easier. Here’s how:
  • Determine what kind of seat mechanism you have. Do your seats go down using strings and straps, a knob, or a lever? Your car’s manual will have this information.
  • Reach in between the seats to grab the string, if it’s a string and strap model. Pull on the string while pressing the seat down.
  • Push in the button/knob on the headrest if you have the knob variety of seats. Keep pushing on the button/knob as you push the seat down.
  • Find the lever near the seat belt locking clip if you have the lever model. Apply pressure to the lever as you lower the seats.
